sugar free caramel sauce?

I am looking for a sugar free caramel recipe. I am making homemade ice cream and I would like to try to add a caramel swirl. I'm not sure how to go about this without the granulated sugar. I was thinking maybe using agave nectar or brown rice syrup, but I don't think it would work in the same way?

Any suggestions?
