curry paste substitute?

Aug 10, 2006 15:00

I am making chili and the recipe calls for "curry paste." I don't have that. I have so many spices and such that I don't want to spend money one yet another thing when I can spend my money on the fresh ingredients. I do have curry powder, several kinds actually. How can i substitute curry powder for curry paste? Is it even possible to do so?

I think in chili you'd be fine to substitute curry powder for curry paste. I'm not sure when it tells you to add the curry paste, but with curry powder it's best to add it either to the dry pan to toast briefly just before you add oil/onions/etc. or with the oil/onions/etc. as opposed to just stirring it in to the liquid.

Curry paste is more than just curry powder. Technically "Curry" is just a combination of spices. You could try googling recipes for curry paste, much like I did. http://www.recipezaar.com/156128 This one is pretty basic, and maybe if you add the ingrediants into your chili, you'll have a similar effect.

it'll add more spice taste to your cooking, curry paste is a combination of blended spices, many people have different variantion; for Indian curry most common are blended ginger, blended chili, blended lemongrass, blended shallot, blended garlic... just get a few of this and that which you think might spice up your cooking and blend them. :)

Are you using the recipe from How it all Vegan?

Because I know it calls for Curry paste, but I've always just skipped that and it's been fine.

I never really thought to replace the curry, i've just skipped it. But I've done so many alterations of this recipe based on whatever I had around the house. I once used speghetti sauce instead of all the tomato stuff, and it tasted the same to me.

I'm not sure which kind of mushrooms the ones I used are called, I think they are just the traditional, typical white mushrooms. I've used Portabella before, and had pretty much the same results.

This is a good recipe though, I like it a lot (so does my family). I usually make Cornbread with it, and that adds a really nice extra.

it was so tasty! thanks!
i skipped the carrots and used green and red bell peppers. i also added many more spices than what the recipe called for. i didnt make it too spicy though, people can always sprinkle on chili powder or a dash of tobasco if they want to spice it up. you can always add more spice and more salt AFTER, but you cant take it away once you added it...learned that the hard way before.
i used white button mushrooms and cermini (sp?) they added a nice meat texture.
i used the rice it called for, but it didnt cook enough, i think because i used wild rice. but the texture was ok because it added a bit of crunch.
