An easier way if you want to cheat is to just add salsa into the rice after it's been cooking for about 20 minutes and the rice absorbs all the salsa-y goodness.

do you cover the rice while it's cooking?
i always burn my brown rice and i cook it forever but it never seems to get soft.
i need some more practice.

always, always cover rice. I wouldn't open it at all if there weren't other stuff cooking in there.
