At my house, we don't celebrate Christmas. We don't celebrate Hannukah*. We don't celebrate Bodi Day** or Kwanza. We celebrate the Winter Solstice.

The Winter Solstice, the precursor to Christmas, is the moment when the days start getting longer again, and the nights start getting shorter. It happens to be at 4:22 PM on the 22nd, this year. This happening is symbolized by Santa Lucia, pictured below. The character is decidely symbolic, and is played by the oldest daughter of the house. She gets a white gown with a red sash, and a crown of candles. Also to symbolize the coming of the light is gifts. We do gifts.

For the most part, the Winter Solstice celebration looks a lot like christmas. There's a tree, Santa Claus, and gifts. The similarity isn't a coincidence: Christmas was placed at that part of the year to adopt pagan traditions already part of the culture (it's the same with Easter.) So, in this way, a lot of people are celebrating the Solstice. It's sort of nice.

Happy Solstice, everybody!!
