This wasn't quite the Doctor's favorite sort of mission - typically, he preferred adventures that involved things that were significantly less likely to explode. Still, he supposed that he'd had more than his fair share of experience with explosions, and as much as he might want to deny it? This sort of mission was right up his alley.

Besides, if there was anything that he'd learned about this city during his stay, it was that drastic measures were very often necessary. The Doctor reminded himself of this fact as he worked on fastening one of the copper plates over the explosive ingredients of one boat. They had to do all that they could do to find a means of escape, and if that meant taking drastic measures against these creatures, well, then.... While it wasn't their fault if they were created - or perhaps programmed might be a more accurate word, considering the discovery of those remotes - to wreak havoc and violence, protecting and saving the innocent people in this city was of the most importance. There was simply no way around this.

And the plan was most ingenious, actually. Well, from a…strictly scientific point of view, he thought to himself. Admiring all the bits and pieces that went into outfitting these boats wasn't really something that the Doctor expected himself to do, but...he had to admit, he'd done a rather excellent job of putting together the particular explosive mixture that he was currently attaching to this boat. And those other mixtures and detonators really were a nice touch on MacGyver's part, he noted....

He snapped out of that reverie at MacGyver's question. Pausing, turning to look over his shoulder, and reminding himself to at least try not to enjoy this (even from a scientific point of view), he answered.

"It's all smooth sailing, so far," the Doctor replied. "Well, I say smooth sailing, but that would be a more accurate idiom to use once these boats have actually begun sailing," he added, double-checking that the plate had been fastened securely. "At any rate, all seems to be going according to plan! How are things on your end? Everything working the way it's meant to?"

"Pretty much," Mac called back, wiping more sweat off his brow. Granted, he wouldn't test these things right now, but the mix was right, and the method was something he'd seen before...rather fittingly enough, used by terrorists to attack armored cars.

Kinda weird being on the other end of it, he had to admit.

"Honestly, I'm not too keen about this, but so far's I can tell, this'd be one of the few ways to actually get 'em good n' distracted, n' maybe break our jailer's hold." He kept tightening connections, his hands deft and eyes practiced. Each explosive was wired, and there would be a simultaneous volley from a single signal. All or nothing.

A long time passed before Mac spoke again. "I hope they're still not somewhere in there. Their consciousness, I mean."

That was encouraging, to know that the other man actually felt the same. It gave the Doctor a rare opportunity to express his own misgivings. "Honestly? I couldn't agree more. Not too keen on the method involved, but with limited resources and...well." He stopped. Sighed. Shook his head. "S'pose it's all we can realistically try at the moment to, as you put it, break our jailer's hold. But, no, I would rather not have to do any of it," he finished, continuing to work.

When MacGyver spoke again, the Doctor's hands stilled momentarily. That was something he had been asking himself ever since the recent events with that man - Basil, he had been called - had occurred.

He nodded without looking up, eyes very dark as he resumed his work on the boats. "I hope not," the Doctor said simply, before hesitating and ultimately deciding to continue. "How can you know, beyond the shadow of a doubt, when that last, tiny spark of humanity has gone out? You've got to be certain, and you can't be." He halted there, although there was much more that he could have said on the subject. Because if that consciousness was still in there, and providing that there was still a way to reach it, this act would be nearly unforgivable.

"But, of course, we have to assume that they're not still in there. There isn't any sign that they are...." You've got to be certain, though, and in this case, they couldn't be. That was the worst part of this - that they had to act on a mere assumption. "But I suppose what we have to remember is that this is one of our very few chances to really and truly make a difference."

"Yeah, I know," Mac nodded, grouping wires as he talked. "Omelettes n' eggs, right? That's just it, though. When you're lookin' to make a big enough omelette, everything starts to look like an egg."

Plates in place, charges ready, detonators ready, connections ready for priming. They moved quickly. They were the best at what they did.

"...'Course, they might be askin' us to put 'em outta their misery. Wishful thinking, but..."

"I'll be the first to admit, I wasn't quite expecting to find a way to relate our current situation to the preparation of a breakfast dish. But it's surprisingly fitting, I'll give you that." He actually smiled faintly at that, as grim a metaphor as it was - MacGyver certainly had a unique way with words.

"Wishful thinking, perhaps, but there could be a bit of truth in it. It isn't improbable...."

The Doctor stood back and looked over the work he had just completed, quickly double-checking everything. Almost ready. A glance told him that MacGyver seemed to be nearly finished as well. "Well, what do you think? Are we nearly done with this bit?"

"Scratch the 'nearly'," he tossed back, nodding with grim satisfaction at the set connections. All systems green n' so on. "Everything's in place, and we're ready to sail."

Picking up the radio at his belt and wiping his forehead again, he clicked open a channel to Zero and said quietly, "R Team reporting. The boats are ready," before thumbing the talk function off, leaving his wishes unsaid.

I really hope it's worth it.

Zero's voice came back over the radio. "All of the devices are responding in the green. Very good, gentlemen." A moment later, the boats pushed off on their own, on their predetermined paths: two north, the third south.
