Silver Lining

Aug 22, 2010 07:44

On my way home from my sadly-concluded vacation, I stopped by one of the Usual Thrift Suspects and picked up five items: a knit sleeveless periwinkle dress (under which some kind of body glove or control-top pantyhose, hello every single stitch I was wearing underneath); a drapey black top; a crocheted white top that is lovely and basically see-through by itself, but will make a nice over-layer with a colorful camisole, or under-layer with a sweater; a navy sleeveless knit top; and a quilted pink-and-lilac patchwork zip-jacket, a bit cropped at the sleeve, which I adore despite its potential ridiculosity. It will be just the thing to brighten the doldrums of February, over some dour all-gray outfit.

(I'd seen the periwinkle dress and the jacket back in early July, last time I visited, but they were full price and I didn't love them that much. It's pretty uncommon for me to be able to stalk a garment, but they stayed on the rack till 50% off rolled around.)

(I forgot to mention that, because this was at the end of the vacation, I tried on all these nice tops with three long red scabs across my left breast, in a radial pattern, which signified the direction in which the cat had tried to escape me earlier in the day. She had clearly figured out that she was on her way to the car, and very unhappy about it; once within the car she went through some voluntary contortions, including an onramp under my right knee, before settling at last in her regular spot, under the driver's-side seat among old fast-food trash and dust bunnies, moaning disconsolately. (It's that, or keep her in the travel-cage, where she thrashes and screams. Anyway, it was a pretty funny adornment, and possibly explains why all the tops I bought were high-cut.)

In unrelated news (except that it's also thrifty), I got this super-cute stripey material from the fabric store clearance bin, not quite a yard, and although I could make a straight skirt out of it, I'm kind of wondering if now is the time to teach myself to match patterns on a top. I have a fine eight-piece pattern (actually it is the top half of a sheath dress, and the straight skirt is the bottom half of the same pattern), and I've done it before in a solid (and discovered there's a reason for interfacing on a V-neck). I'll lay it out later and see if I can make it work.

The reason for the title of this post is that I literally found silver lining material! It's some light polyester, and I would have said it would be for the kind of garment I can't make myself (yet/ever), except right there on the clearance label (usually distinctly lacking in information) it said "anti-static lining." $2.91 for .972 of a yard! The insides of things are always smaller than the outsides, right?

I have moved mostly over to Dreamwidth. I haven't closed comments here yet, but probably will someday! Please comment there if you can.
