The season has gotten underway now, and I'm... interested and puzzled. Which is about what one can hope for, I guess?
I think we're meant to see Alternalivia as a bad person, which is sad. I would be much more interested in her if she had paused longer before blowing away a random bystander, or if she just quietly let him go. Presumably she sees everybody here as the enemy, more or less, but that doesn't make them not people; and she's got to be able to tell that her enemies have no idea that they're enemies. So for her to be so hard-hearted so soon after infiltration really makes it difficult to identify with her.
It speaks poorly of Peter's discernment that he hasn't noticed anything yet. I did like how engrossed he became in the engineering problem that is this season's arc, half-avoidance and half-fascination, but dude has better spidey-senses than that. He's spent half his life skedaddling at the first hint of trouble, after all.
I do like him allying with Broyles. They'd hinted at that affinity, the two brass-tacks people in the group, a year ago, and I hope to see it followed up. It gives the show a certain grounding, to see that they're not totally ignorant of how the world works, that they're thinking about politics and warfare rather than just galloping forward to the next exciting weirdness.
For the record, sound waves and aural perception don't work that way, but whatever. It is SKIENCE!
I am pretty sure that inheritance and corporate ownership don't work that way either. But whatever: it is FINANSE! Which is like SKIENCE only with better outfits and more golf.
Back to Alternalivia: if she's so hard-hearted here, what was she like on the other side? Will Alterna-Charlie be constantly surprised at the humane concern of Ourlivia? I have to imagine that basic character traits like that will bleed through, whatever the memory-programming. And I'm looking for a humane representative of the alternate world, because as rough as that world is, it's obviously not so rough that every character should be turned so dark, so dislikeable. Alterna-Charlie, I am counting on you. You and Henry Cabbie: you will save your world, or redeem it at least before the end.
Just as Ourlivia got to meet her Alterna-mom, I am still holding out hope that Alternalivia will get the chance to meet the niece that was never born in her home world. All shall be empathetic! All! Thus to increase the horror of a whole world's destruction because of a selfish mistake 20 years ago!
And then all shall partake of cookies baked by Astrid. (Massive Dynamic can fund a lot of cookies, you know.) They will not be brain-flavored cookies, rest assured.
