Character Info
Character Name:Medusa Gorgon
Character’s Age:approx over eight hundred years old. Appears to be a woman in her early thirties, however.
Fandom: Soul Eater manga
Timeline: chapter 83 (taken from manga only. Not anime.)
Appearance: As her appearance has changed throughout the series, this is
her current body in full. She is a tall woman of a leaner, more athletic build then average. Her hair, currently, is black, arranged in a spiked style in the back, with two long strands framing her face that entwine counter-clockwise, and rest on her chest. She has average, white complexation, with yellow irises. Her most striking feature would be the black dotted snake tattoos that entwine her arms, from shoulder to wrist. She also has a tail on occasion that ends in an arrow, which she uses for attacks. When she is serious, angry, or she wants to intimidate, her eyes go black with yellow iris, her mouth stretches from nearly ear to ear in a closed smile, and sometimes, an arrow like tongue can be seen out of her mouth. Though her outfits tend to change throughout the series, with the possession of Arachne’s body, she is wearing a long hoodie dress, with a subtle spider web patterning surrounding the neckline. She also has her nails painted black, with yellow arrows, pointing from finger to tips.
There are two interesting parts about her varying appearance: her doctor guise, and her witch appearance. For the most part, there is little difference; it is mostly the demeanor and the way she carries herself that makes the difference. As for why I am bringing this up, it is due to her having the guise that she will most likely have for most of hellpointe, until she feels otherwise.
She wears a lab coat in her doctor guise, with a twin arrow belt pointing downwards. Her hair is tamer (though her hair is still notably spike, it seems brushed down, rather than punk like against her head. She also has a tendency to wear long sleeves in this guise, covering her tattoos. As well, she wears slip on, flat shoes. The reason the shoes are brought up, is because notably as a witch, she does not wear anything upon her feet. Instead, she goes bare, with painted toenails (this with the arrow pointing upwards). If by nothing else, you can tell if she’s ready to be serious by the lack of shoes and covered arms.
History: Considering how much history and how many chapters she is in, I’ll refer you to
this.Personality: Love? Happiness? These do not matter to her. Cold blooded may be the best phrase that suits her personality well. If she is kind, it is out of sarcasm, a sign she is about to kick someone’s butt, or she has a use for the trait. She has an understanding of what makes people tick and what makes them willfully follow her to anywhere she wants, for the sake of her own goals. She is more or less geared towards an intellectual understanding, not an emotional one. This does not mean she is without emotion-far from it. She can feel frustration, satisfaction, and near hysterics. However, she does not consider herself another within the crowd, even with other witches. She is an outsider, with her own goals and ambitions. She does feel a kinship with Stein, and a borderline respect for the leaders of the Witch and Shibusen frictions. The kinship with Stein is due to his ‘creativity’ and his sadistic nature-Medusa is a sadist herself. She respects Mabaa and Death for their power-no more, no less.
People are her tools, and she will use whatever means needed in order to achieve the greatest power within the world. The black blood-and her blood daughter Crona-are the main tools in which she uses in order to achieve them. Crona may be her greatest crime and testament of how she views people, and the things she wants. Though she has a measure of patience in order to strike at the right time, she has never been truly affectionate to her. Instead, she ensured that Crona would see cruelty, and be cruel from a young age with the ‘tasks’ assigned, and the punishment of sensory deprivation for days on end. Even after Crona was finally creating a new life for herself, Medusa approached her, and saw to it that her daughter was used well for her own purposes, before recalling her back. She does not seem to feel guilt for what she has done-but for the time she was reflected in the demon mirror. When she did, she did not seem comfortable with the feeling, and likely buried it. Guilt has no use. She may have a long road before she will be the most powerful, but she’s certainly getting there.
What is interesting to note though, is in her deception, she can put on the appearance of being kind, very helpful, and lady like. She can still be a serious person-that never fully goes away-but she is more tolerant of, for example, being clung to by Spirit, or by comments that she usually does not tolerate. She is very skilled at pretending to be a caring, warm doctor, doing her best for people-which makes one wonder who she used as an example, or if she was once this way.
She is not a person easily shaken. She usually has a clear understanding of most situations and of people, studying them before making her move-or saying words to goad them into a certain action. The only points she has been seen truly thrown off her stride is meeting with Death in her child guise, and fighting Justin Law and the demon mirror, Tezca Tlipoca. Otherwise, she is quite assured of herself, and only gloats when she is sure of victory. Her bearing, while at times nearly regal, is not over put. She is a self contained, dangerous woman. Perhaps in some ways, she is more dangerous than other enemies that have shown up in the Soul Eater series: though they all will, and can use people effectively as tools to be used and disposed of, Medusa thinks for the long term-and with her aggressive personality and relentless focus, she is determined to come out on top.
Powers/Abilities: Being one of the main villains of the series, that means that…well, she’s no weakling. As a witch, she has access to magic. As due to her age, she’s had a long time to develop her skills. They are as follow:
Martial arts: Though not extensive, they are remarkable, as she is able to-at least for some of the time-hold her own against Stein in a physical fight. Witches often do not rely on physical prowess if they can help it. Still, she has a healthy body to go with a healthy mind. Her physical fighting style relies on her tail and hard soled feet. What we’ve seen is a mostly defensive form of it, but it was enough to impress Stein.
Deception: I bring this up because this is a strong ability of hers-one of the best. She was able to fool many at Shibusen-including Death-into thinking she was merely human with the skills of a school doctor. Even after her race is revealed, she is able to fool Maka and the others into thinking her desire to take her sister’s organization down was not to possess Archane’s body for herself but to rescue her daughter.
Researcher: She has been studying madness, the black blood, and the Kishin situation for years. In this, she may be one of the few experts of the field, other than the book of Eibon’s Noah, or the great eight warriors.
Doctor: Though it was only part of a disguise, she did have the abilities to use mundane drugs, herbs, and other skills in order to qualify as the Shibusen’s school doctor (not to mention create medications to suit her own ambitions).
Witch/spells:
Part of her witch powers relies on vectors, and snakes. Often while using these powers, she needs to chant a mantra, like most of her kind. Hers is “Snake nake cobra cobura”. There are times where she does not use them. Those shall be listed with the other powers below.
Serpent Whip: Medusa extends one of her snake tattoos to strike from afar.
Vector Arrow: Attacks with a flurry of arrows directed at the opponent (which are now interconnected by a web).
Analysis Disassemble: Using numerous Vector Arrows, Medusa is able to pull things, such as a magical coating, apart.
Steam Vector: This attack surrounds Medusa with her Vector Arrows making a spinning, tornado like shield. She has also displayed the ability to compress the Vector Arrows following this attack on command, to surround and crush an opponent.
Snake Bomb: Places one of thousands of snakes from her body into someone else; it will only detonate when she gives the signal. She may also use the snake to spy, or increase madness.
Vector Boost: A magic that doubles the power drawn in the direction of the arrow.
Vector Conduct: A spell technique used to allow someone to see hidden arrows that Medusa has placed to guide them.
Vector Plate: A technique that places an arrow upon the ground which launches whoever stands over it in the direction that it is pointing.
Arithmetic Magic: Magic Calculation: is a spell used by Witches as a 'place maker' for placing the exact coordinates of a magical spell. The spell is especially useful in Spatial Magic when precise coordinates and area measurements are crucial for the spell's successful execution, or when opening a portal into another dimension and connecting two dimensions. It appears that a requirement of this ability is the adoption of an unusual stance in operation, and cooperation in order to fulfill the exact requirements. In Medusa’s usage of the spell, small representations of her magic appear while conducting the spell and long strands of arithmetic equations coil around each other upon the spell's execution.
Soul Possession: Medusa is able to possess a body, and use it for her own, with no or little resistance from the original owner.
Spying long distance: An unnamed spell allows for Medusa to observe Crona and others with her glass ball. She is usually seen sitting cross legged, and focusing on the images that appear.
Madness fusion: Using her kishin and madness inspired creations with the use of the black blood, she has enabled a boost for herself and for Crona in battle. It may vary due to application or personality type; however, in the use Medusa has used for it, is a mobile version for herself in orer to ward off a madness attack, or fused with her tattooed snakes, in order to boost their attacks (or perhaps only the mad can attack the mad; it isn’t entirely clear). Though she does not waver personality wise, her serpant whip does take on a larger, crested form. With Crona using the black clown, she gains not an attack boost, but a defensive armor that encircles the torso region.
Racial abilities:
Soul Protect: As the witches' soul wavelength can be easily distinguished by trained meisters, they developed an incantation named "soul protect" which conceals their presence, but renders them unable to use their powers unless the incantation is lifted.
Flight: Most, if not all, witches have the ability to fly. This done by simply floating in the air, or flying on a broomstick. (Medusa usually uses a broomstick if she flies at all)
Spiritual Flexibility: There have been instances in which witches have a high understanding of soul wavelengths -- enough so that they can break their soul into small fragments and reform in due time, as emulated by both Medusa and Arachne.
Meister Capabilities: Although it is unlikely for a witch to partner with a weapon due to strife between them and Shibusen, it is feasible for a witch to use a weapon. Kim Diehl, for example, is a lamp meister.
Longevity: Witches, at least the powerful ones, appear to have incredibly long life spans. Medusa is known to have lived 800 years before the start of the series. Even after eight centuries, Medusa still has the appearance of a young woman. Both Risa and Arisa confirmed that witches have a longer lifespan and so have more youth.
Telepathy: It seems that witches, or those with witch blood, are able to converse with each other over long distances by mind to mind. Crona, Eruka, and Medusa have been seen using this ability in the manga.
Limitations:
Well, first and foremost, she cannot cop out of dying. She cannot shatter her soul. Nor can she possess another person’s body. She cannot turn into a snake. She will not arrive with any of the black blood, rendering any of her research..Unusable to use at this point. She can only use her far seeing orb with a person she has met and touched in person, with a set fifty feet radius. She can only set a snake within a person if they have the players permission-and cannot kill with it unless with permission. She can, however, spy, if the character indigests it with food, drink, or pill form. The vector spells will be weaker than usual, and after using it for more than thirty minutes, Medusa will tire. If she continues for more than half a day, she will pass out, and not wake up for two days.
Writing Samples
Third Person Sample: Her feet squished in the mud. It felt as if there was nothing but mud, plant debris, and wreckage. She had seen things like this before. More than once. Humans and their desire to build homes, only to have nature remind them of their place. Sometimes it made them stronger. Sometimes, it did naught more than wipe out the village. The city. The civilization.
And they wondered how witches became so jaded.
Medusa did not like the feeling of being without weapons. She did not like the feeling of being frail. It was like guilt; it was a feeling she was uncomfortable with. But she made the effort to not display any discomfort. That was a weakness, and she would not have it showing. Not in this…unknown place.
Golden eyes swept through what was left of the town in front of her. No people were outside. Of course not; if they were not repairing their little places, they were resting or getting the hell out. Sometimes people were actually clever, and realized when they were bested. It did not happen often. But it occurred so rarely that it was a pleasant little surprise every time.
But of course, this was not the time to stand around, and marvel at what even the least person could do. She needed information. More so then shelter, she needed to speak to someone, to find out why she was here, and what was expected. If this was an attempt at a spell, or some greater magic that she did not even know about. Perhaps a newly discovered dimensional magic? If it was, and she could learn of it…marvelous. Maybe she could use it without Free. Or, have him test it, when she returned to her latest hiding place. Perfect.
She nodded to herself, and tugged on her coat. With a mumble of the needed magical formula, she encased herself in soul protect, and started walking. She didn’t know if there were any weapons or meisters in this town. It would be foolish to alarm them, or perhaps tip her hand. She was not in the mood to fight. But to overview the library…that would be enjoyable indeed. She may learn something she had not been aware of before.
Though, she mused to herself, it may be better if she spoke with a person. It wouldn’t be in the papers, if this destruction had occurred so recently. She sighed, but started to walk off, hoping to find the library. Perhaps someone was maintaining the collection, and would be willing to speak about their ill turn of luck. Maybe her luck was about to change.
First Person Sample:
[There is a gleam of an eye, close to the lenses. For a moment, they seem slit pupil, similar to a snake; then they change to a normal human’s, though still golden. A once feral smirk changes to that of a more, begin expression. A frown, but she is acting normal, without the hint of a nightmarish expression. She seems to be talking to herself, unaware that it’s on.]
This is a curious device. Is it useful for anything? Or is it as…useless as this letter? This isn’t Russia. There’s no such town as Bell Pointe.
Hm. Maybe it’s attempted banishment. Clever of them to try. But it would have been better to kill me.
The mad look in her eyes returns again, and her smile seems to stretch from ear to ear.
How does that saying go? If you fail once, try again? Heh. Cowards.
