West Coast Swing, Episode 2

  • Marin County is absolutely beautiful country. I can see why all the rich folks live there.
  • Muir Woods didn't happen. It's a system of hiking trails with no through roads and I didn't feel well enough to hike. But, its real distinction is just that it's the closest stand of redwoods to San Francisco, so no huge loss.
  • The Pacific Coast Highway is like the Blue Ridge Parkway with salt water. It's two lanes that closely hug the precipitous hills all along the northen California coastline and every thirty yards, there's something else to take a picture of. We wore our camera's battery out with all the Kodak moments.
  • There were also a few Depends moments as Dad drove. Good thing we picked up worry stones at Muir Beach in Marin County.
  • Eureka looks absolutely nothing like the TV show. It's really more like an old mining town in western Pennsylvania or upstate New York, or an abandoned manufacturing center somewhere in Michigan. Everything looks like it was built in the late 70s or early 80s and the populace looks really down at the heels.
  • The route I had planned out did not go up the PCH, as we later found out, so its optimistic estimates of getting to Eureka by 7:00 turned out grossly innacurate. We really got here about 9:00. Pacific time.
  • We ate at Denny's because we didn't feel like being experimental. There, we saw a guy dressed as Quail-Man from the old "Doug" cartoon and were waited on by a guy straight out of a Cheech & Chong sketch. I fully expected him to say "Dave's not here, man" at any moment. He even had the big mustache.
  • Today, we strike out for Redwood National Park and aim for Crater Lake.
