Abilities:
Probably in great part due to her past - which you’re in the dark about at the moment, Yuuki’s blood is savory and tempting to other vampires. Is that a key skill, since it’s constantly getting her into trouble? She’s cute bait.
She also knows how to wield a long staff (called Artemis), an anti-vampire weapon, and apparently knows her way around a gun, having commandeered Zero’s before and recognizing when the safety was off.
She is very spry jumping up on things, climbing trees, and jumping out of windows. If you stripped her of her weapon, that'd probably be her next best bet, finding something to spring off of.
She is not a green girl when it comes to fighting and defense, although she’s obviously physically limited by her own strength and size.
She also carries the chain around her wrist which has the power to immobilize Zero. It works in tandem with the tattoo on his neck.
She can't read minds or do magic, and she's really pretty pathetic when it comes to being "glamored" by vampires. But what she lacks in physical strength and magical ability, I'd say she makes up for in tenacity, heart, and courage, especially when it concerns someone she cares about or someone who is in danger.
Personality:
On the surface, Yuuki is an exceptionally cheerful girl, smiling and affectionate - when she is not in Prefect mode. While it seems to perpetually annoy Zero and endear her to Kaname, she is typically optimistic, protective, naïve (well, who wouldn’t be when they’ve had to start from scratch). But she’s also very protective, seriously invested in both her job as prefect at Cross Academy as well as being the special guardian to Zero. She leaps from great heights without hesitation, rushes into dangerous situations - including a cluster of noble vampires, whatever it takes as long as she sees students wandering alone or worries that Zero or Kaname might be hurt or in danger. It’s not as if she is really any match for any of the above, even with her staff, an anti-vampire weapon. She is still just a human girl. She is reminded of this often, but it doesn’t seem to deter her spirit to fight.
Unfortunately, she is a teenage girl, and still susceptible to the charms of handsome vampires. They use it as bait, and she’s especially weak when it comes to Kaname. She’s constantly losing her thought process, her ability to speak, her will, whenever he is around, although she seems to have similar trouble with the other Night Classmen, uttering weak protests and dropping her defenses when they overwhelm her. She’s prone to blushing and letting her sentences trail off.
She is a little more in control of her faculties with Zero, emphasis on a “little”. She can usually show more of her will, especially since dealing with him demands a stronger will, since he is constantly fighting her off or trying to run away. That is a grave fear of hers, that he will just leave the Academy, especially after she knows what he is going through and his self-disgust with his own increasing vampire nature. He even fights her offering of blood initially, though he gradually initiates the exchange on his own, and when he tries to take too much, she does try to urge him to let her go and fight him off. He says that she is his victim, although that’s clearly not how she sees it. She wants to help, and having had first-hand experience with crazed vampires, she refuses to let him degenerate to such a level.
She is called little Miss Prefect several times, since she tries to be all business about her job. It’s kind of comic, really, her trying to boss around the entire class(es) alongside Zero, given that she is so small, so unimposing, so typical schoolgirl with a staff and a snappy attitude when it’s called for, but not so intimidating to a crowd.
Throughout the series, Yuuki doesn't seem like the most invested student. She is constantly sleeping through class, or talking during lectures, but really, she has a hectic schedule, student by day, guardian of the school by night? Doesn't leave much time for sleep.
She is perpetually trying to reach out to those she cares for. Unfortunately, aside from her friend Yuri, she seems to be surrounded by very secretive individuals who are constantly shutting her out, including her adoptive father, the Chairman, tender, but evasive Kaname, and cold-shoulder Zero. And yet she persists, undeterred by their attempts to brush her off or keep her in the dark, though it seems at this point, when she clings to Zero and is trying to reach out to Kaname, that she might actually be cracking under the pressure. Her warmth can only carry her so far.
She wants to view vampires as good and kind, to believe in the pacifism and peace set up by the Chairman and Kaname at Cross academy, although there is constant evidence to the contrary. Sue a girl for being naïve and sweet to a fault.
She has no qualms offering up her blood if she thinks it will help someone - although Zero seems to be the beneficiary of the offering, although she has bared her throat to Kaname as well on numerous occasions, and offered her blood to Shizuka Hio in order to save Zero. So she's sacrificing in that way, if she thinks it will save or benefit someone else.
History:
To this point in canon, Yuuki Cross (黒主 優姫, Kurosu Yūki) has no memories older than ten years ago, and in fact, she’s struggling to find the answers and afraid of what she might recall. The earliest memory she possesses is from the age of 6, when she was wandering alone out in the snow. A crazed level E vampire tried to attack her, and she was saved by a “kind vampire”, Kaname Kuran. He brought her to Cross Academy, where she became the adoptive daughter of the Chairman, the headmaster of the school. Apparently unable to speak initially, much less dress herself, Yuuki had no recollection of vampires, no known family, nothing except her newfound attachment to her savior and the company of the Chairman who would have her call him father.
Six years later, and four years prior to the beginning of their story, the Chairman takes in Zero Kiryuu, an orphan whose family had been killed by a vampire. He is quiet and withdrawn, and yet from the beginning, Yuuki cares for him like a brother. She tries to draw him out from his self-imposed solitude, cleaning his wounds, attempting to show him affection, asking him questions he refuses to answer. It’s not until years later that she discovers Zero’s secrets - that he was from a well-known vampire hunter family, that he was in fact turning into a vampire himself, fighting the cravings and the pain in silence. She discovers his secret when Zero is at a low point, needing blood and unable to resist. He bites her for the first time. Not long after this, knowing that he is degenerating, that his body won't accept the blood tablets, and it is only drinking fresh blood that will keep him from slipping into insanity as well as lessen the pain, Yuuki starts offering up her own blood willingly to slack Zero's thirst.
Both Zero and Yuuki are prefects at Cross Academy, “guardians” of the school, meant to keep the peace - and keep the distance between the Day Class (human) and the Night Class (vampires). By this point, even though she was in the dark about Zero’s nature, Yuuki, as a guardian for the school, is privy to the fact that the Night Class is composed entirely of vampires. The Day Class, however, is completely unaware of this. They are, however, like happy fan girls fawning over these exceptionally beautiful people, rushing at them any chance they get during the changeover of classes.
Yuuki intervenes when Zero tries to end his life by his own gun. Instead of letting him follow through, she promises to him and the Chairman to become his guardian, to keep him from turning into a destructive vampire. As added assurance, the Chairman gives Yuuki a bracelet which, when sealed with Zero’s own blood, completes the magic. She has only to press the symbol to Zero’s throat to immobilize him. It’s a failsafe.
Most of the story is a subtle unfolding of secrets that Yuuki has been blind to, “for her own protection”. Zero’s nature, for example, or the fact that her savior, Kaname is a pureblood vampire. When she learns this, she doesn’t understand why he would show such preferential treatment to a simple girl like her, why he goes so far as to say he loves her or to offer to turn her into a vampire. She convinces herself that he doesn’t really mean it. He belongs with another like him, someone like the beautiful pure blood woman she meets at the party of vampires she unintentionally wakes up to (Sara-sama).
Finally, after winter break she is resolved to ask Kaname about her past. After attempting to look into hunter records alongside Zero and the Chairman, detailing that night ten years ago - the book is turned to the right page and incinerates before she can see the truth and Yuuki is convinced that Kaname, whose face she constantly sees when she tries to remember that night, must be privy to the truth. She tries and fails to ask him, too distracted to pose the question. Of course, Kaname isn’t prepared to tell her yet. When Yuuki tries to concentrate and remember on her own, she hallucinates, seeing blood and the face of the monstrous level E that attacked her.
To this point in canon, she is under the protection of Zero, sanctioned by Kaname. Every time she accidentally hurts or cuts herself and seems to find herself in a sticky situation where she can’t overcome on her own with her staff, Artemis, Zero is there, Bloody Rose in hand, ready to defend her against the vampires that seemed particularly attracted to her blood. She’s not supposed to go out alone, if that night ten years ago wasn’t a hard enough lesson. Apparently it wasn’t enough of a warning, because Yuuki keeps wandering, taking it upon herself to enter into the Moon dorm on several occasions looking for Kaname; she goes out looking for Zero each time he is sequestered or taken.
This is the turning point for Yuuki. She’s hovering on the precipice of the truth, and breaking down under the weight of the strain, the fear of the unknown and worry that it might be something horrible. And, oh yeah, upon arriving at the facility, she'll be going at it alone.
Overall Info Rating: G - ummm PG 13? She doesn't curse, but there is occasional skirt flashing and mild violence. /SWAT
Death: Discuss beforehand, please. But it really wouldn't take a lot to achieve it. She is human (now).
Smut: Not likely... unless it's some crazy A/U and she's really not herself. Kissing and biting is as far as it goes for Yuuki in canon, and that's with a lot of wide-eyed blushing.
Yaoi - Het - Yuri: Even less likely, but yeah, willing to discuss if it ever comes to that.
