In Which We Dance Around In Time Enough That Tenses Become Problematic

Brendon had never gotten around to fully trusting Lady Victoria. So when Bob and Spencer, whom he considered friends, started being seen more and more in her company, Brendon was a little taken aback.

For a day or two, he wondered if he’d been mistaken, misread the situation. Were Bob and Spencer cutting new deals behind his back? Brendon went sniffing, and what he found intrigued him further. Whatever was growing between Bob and Spencer and Victoria did not smell like a business arrangement -- and Lady Victoria had taken to wearing the most unfamiliar little smile whenever the two men had paid a call.

He thinks about digging deeper, but Alex must notice his speculation, because he shakes his head decisively in Brendon's direction, and while Alex trying to look fierce may strike Brendon as a combination of adorable and hilarious, he also helped raise the kid. He knows what Alex is capable of when he's serious, which he seems to be now.

And besides, he raised the kid. Some of Alex's smarts and cunning came from him. Alex adored Victoria, but definitely had no illusions about her. Brendon decided to sit back and let Alex run this one. In the meantime, he had a profitable use for his warehouses on the south dock that Bob might be interested in.

He asks Ryan about it later; he and Spencer had spent half the night chatting away in a corner together anyway. Ryan has also never really gotten over their initial distrust of Victoria, but he just looks at Brendon and says, "I think they just like each other. All of them."

Ryan curls his lip a little, but doesn't add anything more, and so Brendon tries to get over it.
Spencer must have sensed something though, because when they're leaving the warehouse the next day, he casually says "Victoria has her businesses and we have ours. That's it."

Brendon gave up trying to understand.

For a while, it seemed like only those in the slums seemed to have noticed the liasion.

Then Spencer and Bob publicly made the Saporta manor their City address and the gossip went mad.

Brendon smirked as the reaction filtered through the social classes. Anything that caused this kind of a stir couldn’t be bad. He told Ryan, who shrugged. "I hope they don't expect us to come to dinner up there,” he said easily. Brendon laughed, and just like that, the matter is settled.
