yuletide letter

Dear Yuletide author,

Thank you so much for agreeing to write something for me! I hope you'll have fun with my requests; if you'd like to know more about them,

Request 1: Bletchley Circle
Character: Lucy

What goes on in Lucy's brain? What is it like in there? What does it do to her, to be unable to forget anything she's seen? I would really like a story which gets inside Lucy's head -- either set in the series, or before it, or after it. Gen is fine, or het, or f/f (with Millie, perhaps?).

Every now and then I got the sense that the others took her abilities for granted; if you wanted you could write something about that.

Request 2: The Way We Live Now - Anthony Trollope
Character: Marie Melmotte

I have written a little bit about this book here. As threatened there, I really am asking for a story about Marie Melmotte -- the way she takes control of her life fascinates me. Maybe a story about her life after the book ends, in San Francisco with Fisker and Mrs. Hurtle? I like to think that she took control of him pretty firmly, at least, although perhaps not so firmly of Mrs. Hurtle. Or else perhaps a story in which she and Lord Nidderdale do marry -- do they make a success of it? I really liked the understanding they come to towards the end of the book, and would be happy to see more of it.

You are welcome to consider the question of Marie's religion (Trollope never stated whether she was Jewish or not), but you don't have to.

Request 3: Olympic Opening Ceremony (2012)
Characters: Mary Poppins, Voldemort

I admit it, Yuletide Author, I was an Olympics doubter: I did not believe they would be a success. I watched 2012, convinced that it was dangerously close to what was really going on. I was certain that the Opening Ceremony in particular would be a shambles. And then, I saw Didcot: the montage which traveled from the source of the Thames to London paused to give a clear view of the powerplant. Not Oxford: Didcot. A landmark familiar to everyone who travels by train in this part of the world. At that moment, I knew it would all be fine. I may, in fact, have waved my arms around and shouted in joy.

Everything after that was a delight, but I particularly liked the Great Ormond Street sequence (for many reasons, not least that it was a perfectly judged response to the Beijing ceremony). And so I would like a story about Mary Poppins battling Lord Voldemort to save the children. It was a crazy idea, but it worked perfectly: sort of like the whole opening ceremony in a nutshell. You can be a serious or as humorous, as literal or as meta, as whatever as you like. (This prompt obviously may involve some danger to children, but I would really prefer that there be no children killed in this story).

Request 4: Ombria in Shadow - Patricia A. McKillip
Characters: Faey, Mag

This is such a strange book, and I am still not entirely clear about what happens at the end, so I would love a story that explored that. Or a story about the world in which the book ends (if that story is easier to write about characters other than Faey or Mag, that is OK with me). I would love something that explored the relationship between Faey and Mag, because it's so poignant (set whenever you want -- before the book, after it, during it...). Or something about Faey herself, since she's so powerful but seems hardly aware of it: what is she?

I think, as far as Faey and Mag go, I'd prefer gen to f/f, if only because their relationship seems more like mother-child than anything else.

Other notes: In general, I like plot and I like character exploration. Some of these prompts suggest pairings and some don't; you don't have to write a pairing if you don't want to though, and I am perfectly happy with a low-rated story. I don't like stories in which children are harmed, and I don't much like incest (and yet despite both of these I find myself in A Song of Ice and Fire fandom these days. Go figure.) If you keep the violence levels more or less to the lever of the source material, that will be fine with me. My only real squick is D/s, so please don't make that an element of your story.

But you know, I selected these fandoms because I love them, they fascinate me, and I want to see more of them. I will probably be thrilled with whatever you write, and I hope you have fun writing it!
