dotfic has a very interesting analysis of who initiates the hunts in each episode of Supernatural, and there's one interesting pattern -- actually, there are a couple interesting patterns, but one leaped out at me.

I'm pretty much just reproducing my comments on her entry here, for my own reference.

John actually sends Dean and Sam on fewer hunts than I'd thought; Wendigo, Asylum, Scarecrow and Something Wicked (also the vampires in DMB and Salvation, but those are joint projects). Wendigo is probably a red herring, to keep the boys away from wherever he is at the time. Something Wicked is (probably) some kind of unfinished business for Dean. But Asylum and Scarecrow follow immediately upon the events of Home: it seems to me that what happened there made John decide to take a more active hand in what Sam and Dean were doing. to keep them away from him? To keep him away from them? To make sure he knew what they were up to?

John is worried and unhappy about something in Home, and if he didn't already know that Dean really didn't want to be there he sure as hell knew after that phone call. So he knows that something's up and that Dean at least, is worried about being able to handle it. And rather than taking the obvious step of oh, I don't know, communicating with his adult children (and you all know how much I love John, but seriously!), this is the John-equivalent of watching out for them and making sure they don't get involved in anything they -- or he -- can't handle. And it keeps them from getting to close to him while he tracks the demon.

I would very much like to know who set the hunt in which Dean is injured at the beginning of Faith. It follows the two John-initiated hunts, and after Scarecrow John goes silent until Shadow. Not that this proves anything, but it's an interesting possibility.

In other news, I am writing what passes for a sex scene in my mostly-gen writing; I think it may be time to fade to black soon, before I embarrass myself. But yay for hot crossover pairings!
