It's still warmer than Canada, of course. Other than that, I have little to say for myself. I've done some light reading and graded some papers and looked over an article the B.H. is working on. I hooked up the DVD player he bought and followed the "multi-region" instructions so that we could watch The Return of the King.
- Still not enough of the Houses of Healing material (Faramir's speeches are so good!).
- A little re-reading reveals that the Denethor of the movies is not actually as far from that of the books as I had thought; most of his dialogue comes straight from the page and the gap is all in interpretation. It's also important that Tolkien cares enough about military strategy to have Denethor suggest something that is not obviously ridiculous.
- The B.H. commented that one of the reasons he's so fond of these movies is that Jackson's interpretation of the material is quite close to his own. I agree, but hadn't thought of it quite that way, and that helps to make sense of other people's reactions to the films.
- The absence of the "Scouring of the Shire" material was not as much of a problem this time around, probably because the Saruman storyline had been settled elsewhere.
No doubt I had more to say about that, but who knows what it was.
