Reposting my drabbles from the last weeks for
sherlock60. Each drabble goes with the Sherlock Holmes story mentioned in the header. The drabbles will rarely make sense if you don't know the story.
Canon Story:
The Adventure of the Norwood BuilderTitle: Mister McFarlane of Graham & McFarlane
Rating: G
Author's Notes: A possible backstory riddled with, I readily admit, too much coincidence. Inspired by the odd supposition that John Hector McFarlane had never heard of Jonas Oldacres. But what if he knew the man? What if amongst Oldacre's creditors were clients of Graham & McFarlane? What if the asthmatic, weak-mouthed Mister McFarlane had devised a trap that Jonas Oldacre stumbled into, rather than the other way around?
The landlord of the Anerley Arms handed the paper to the solicitor. "Here, my claim to Oldacre's assets. But he's still broke, is he not?"
"Oh no." A smile appeared on Mr Graham's face. "I had my junior partner on his case. Last week, Scotland Yard was able to retrieve his missing fortunes. Quite the bright young chap, my partner."
Canon Story:
The Adventure of the Dancing MenTitle: Turning the Dancing Men to Good Use
Rating: PG
Words: 60
Author's Notes: Someone had to do it. (I'm rather guessing it's been done loads of time before. :))
John had been patient with him. Sherlock hated losing. It was not even the smitten sod's life but the futility of his efforts that irked him. One could hardly count the Dancing Men amongst his successful cases.
A slip of paper was lying on his desk.
A smile ghosted over the detective's face.
Canon Story:
The Adventure of the Solitary CyclistTitle: Love's Selfishness
Rating: G
Pairing: Holmes/Watson
Words: 60
'I wonder,' Holmes began one evening, 'whether you think it selfishness that I keep you around.'
I dropped my pipe in startled amazement. 'Why on earth would you wonder that?'
'I keep you from your practice. And from...'
Another marriage, he did not say.
'Well', I replied, 'I assure you I'm exactly where and with whom I want to be.'
Canon Story:
The Adventure of the Three StudentsTitle: How Miles McLaren Got a Lucky Streak
Rating: G
Words: 60
Plato. Miles McLaren was sure of it; the Greek translation had to be Plato.
He ran into Gilchrist on the stairs. The chap was white as a sheet.
"Studying too much Plato, have you?"
"Thucydides", Gilchrist muttered absent-mindedly.
"What?"
But Gilchrist had already disappeared into his room.
Thucydides… Well, he'd better spend the night reading up on the Peleponnesian War.
Canon Story:
The Adventure of the Golden Pince-NezTitle: The Death of Willoughby Smith
Rating: G
Words: 60
At night, a tempestuous wind blows from Kent into London. Through a crack in the window-frame it crashes into 221b Baker Street. It circles the jar with the preserved red leech; it tears through dusty documents. Words, hidden or plain, mean nothing to it. What it carries smells of blood, of a very young life ended well before its time.
Canon Story:
The Adventure of the Missing Three-QuarterTitle: A Winter Afternoon
Pairing: Holmes/Watson
Rating: PG
Words: 60
Caught in a melancholy mood, Holmes suggested a visit to Blackheath, and on our return from my old club, he made love to me. In any other man I would have suspected fear of death. But to Holmes death was as natural as birth or sex. What puzzled, even upset him, were these subtler sentiments - loyalty, friendship, and ultimately, love.
