Too many things to say.
The way you have arranged this is both brilliant and beautiful. You know I adore artful repetition - and of course it links them all together so seamlessly.

The glimpse of where he came from and how his mother has both aged and fallen but is still graceful, still loved, still his mother is fabulous. I also love him knowing he can count the shapes but he did what he was told and identified the number. Vaughan at a young age... still Vaughan.

The contrast between Hedessa and Idessa, the things he did with them, his uncertainty (oh such a rare sight of /that/) is amazing.

A new name for Perda? And what is this that she is doing? I must have some more details on that!

And lastly, always, brilliant phrases.
pale and perfect skin a better display for such luxuriance than any jeweler's velvet
felt immediately thankful he hadn't found her hip or something worse with that careless grab for salvation
Her fingertips smelled of clean soft soap and he parted his lips, daring to touch them with his tongue, to discover if they tasted the same
Perda's hands were weirdly businesslike
he marveled at how smooth her skin was, how sleek and silken age had made it

And of course more, but I'd hate it if my comment was as long as your vig. Thank you, always, for a peek into his past and inside his head. <3
