Franziska was looking forward to today's trial. She could finally savor the fruit of her labour, the satisfaction of bringing a large-scale investigation to a close. All she needed to do was step foot into the court room, and ( Read more... )

Neku happened to be one such passerby, and even if he hadn't been relatively close, the crack of that whip seemed to echo throughout the entire scale of the city. He jumped back on instinct, letting out a quick gasp, and almost thought it might have been thunder, if not for quickly recalling that such a phenomenon does not occur deep in the ocean. But, one glance quickly answered any of the questions that could have arisen. Wet clothes, bad attitude? Yep, this one's new here.

... Although that didn't really explain the whip.

It seems that she's trying to calm down now, pondering as she folds her arms, and throughly ignoring Neku's staring. How lucky for him.

"It has to be Alba's men... There would be no one else who'd try to kidnap me..." Franziska mumbles to herself but as soon as that thought entered her mind, it seems to make he angry again. "Only a foolish fool at the bottom of a foolish pit of foolhardy fools would foolishly think that this would stop me...!"

She swings her whip again in frustration. Watch out, Neku. You may or may not get hit.

And this time, it lashes enough that he really had to jump back, and it was a good thing, because chances are, he just might have gotten hit. Once might have been an accident, but twice meant she was fully aware of what she was doing, and that called for intervention, especially because he was the almost victim in this case.

"Hey!" he shouted, raising a fist in the air. "You wanna watch where you're swinging that thing!?"

How rude! Franziska glares at the boy with the headphones, her irritability increased upon being chastised for her usage of the whip. To think that a kid would have some nerve to yell at her like that! It was just so... infuriating!

"It's not my fault if someone foolishly walks into it like a fool!" she retorts, argument being as natural to her as the act of breathing. "I might stop once I get answers as to where and why I'm here and not at the courthouse!"

"You came from a courthouse?" he thinks to himself, eying the whip. "Yeah. I can see that."

Her entire argument and her presentation of it were both just so over-the-top ridiculous that Neku was really having a hard time taking her seriously. Foolishly like a fool, huh? If you don't have a vocabulary, don't flaunt it.

"Do what you want," he told her, "but don't involve others. If you want to wave that around like some kid, do it in your own space."

"......!"

That seemed to really hit a nerve, seeing that she suddenly became silent. The last time she had been told off successfully was when she was talking to an 8-year-old. It was a really crappy feeling, and she doesn't like experiencing it again.

"W-Well! I was just kidnapped, I don't know where I am, my head hurts, and my clothes are wet!" she fires back finally, trying to nurse her slightly wounded pride simultaneously. "I'm just reacting like any other person would in this stiuation!"

... Times twenty, that is.

Well, her response is actually kind of right. Everyone else thus far has experienced a range of reactions. It was one of those ordeals where you can really spot the ones with temper problems right on the first meeting. But what do you know? That seemed to actually be some backhanded form of apology, which Neku wasn't expecting. He wasn't necessarily impressed, since really, it was still kind of a childish comeback, but she got a tiny cookie, maybe.

"You mean like everyone else has done in this situation," he corrected. "You're not the first person to end up like this."

"...?"

It seems that he has caught Franziska's interest enough that she's actually calmed down a bit. There was nothing she liked more than receiving information, and connecting the pieces with logic to figure out the bigger picture. Such an inquiring mind was perfect for a prosecutor like her. In other words; good work, Neku.

"There are others whom where abducted...? Perhaps a conspiracy of some sort?"

She really did calm down! Neku almost can't believe he's talking to the same person; not that he's complaining, of course. It was still a bit tiresome going through the details-- or rather, lack thereof-- with each new arrival, but what could he do? He wasn't making any progress on his own, and there was without a doubt one common thread that each one shared: the desire to get back home.

"For example: me." He held his hand, displaying the strange symbol that was currently glowing. "Anyone who's non-native to this city has a mark like this. You can't miss 'em, seeing as they all started glowing for some reason."

Well, he was suddenly cooperative and more polite. Though Franziska couldn't complain about it either. This made information-gathering much smoother.

"Hmm," she studies the marking carefully, making a mental note of the design and overall glowiness. The details might prove useful in the future. "That's odd... I don't think I have one..."

That's because it's on the left side of her forehead, slightly covered by her bangs if it weren't for the glowing. The most inconvenient place ever.

He wonders if he should point it out...

... Of course he should.

"Um," was all he managed at first, his answer coming in the form of a stare more than anything. Still, just in case, he tapped his forehead. "I'm sure they sell hats around here somewhere."

"...!" Franziska quickly covers her forehead with her free hand, quite shocked and embarrassed by this turn of events. How dare they put it on such a strange place! If she wasn't so troubled by it, she'd have whipped someone out of anger. And the conversation would start over again.

"I... I honestly don't think a hat would help at this point..."

"Yeah, that's true," Neku agreed. "It was just a joke, anyway."

... And he froze up momentarily. It happened again. He started to say something else, but those words just rolled right off his tongue. Damnit, and just when he'd gotten her calmed down! He didn't need her flipping her lid again over some side-comment (and especially one she'd apparently missed the first go around).

Well, maybe she still wouldn't think anything of it.

"....."

That would be Franziska turning red from embarrassment, and subsequently trying to whip you. No hard feelings, bro. She's just shy, is all. Might want to get out of the way, though.

"I-I don't have time for things like that!"

And that time, he wasn't able to avoid it, and he cried out as it lashed against him. He'd never cared to know what it's like to be stung by a whip, but it hurt.

"Nngh!" he muttered, gritting his teeth as he placed a hand on the sore. "What was that for!?"

Well, if Neku decides to actually stick around, he's going to have to get used to it. Or find a way to become part of the Really Cool People species, since for some reason they have their own ways of being unwhippable.

"Don't embarrass me like that again!"

At least she decided to only whip him once.
