Skate rink? What is this? They didn't have this last year. Least not as far as Selphie remembers. Of course, Selphie was so completely distracted with the various goings on, that her head is turning in directions that are different from where her feet are walking.

Naturally, she was going to be walking right into Squall, because her eyes were wide as she watched some kids pull on their skates.

It would take more than just a little bumping into to get Squall to topple over, but it does shake a few candy canes out of his arms. He doesn't bother to even try to pick them up, and looking to see who ran into him, surprise, surprise, it's Selphie.

"...hi Selphie."

In all fairness, Squall would probably be reasonably resistant to Selphie-type stumblings anyway by now.

"Squall!"

She's looks more than happy to see him, but a hug is prevented out of her respect for the things in his arms, and she stoops to pick up the dropped candy canes.

"Isn't Christmas fun?"

"It's...okay."

All he sees so far is a bunch of decorations and people trying to get him to do things like skate. Not his idea of fun, but Squall doesn't consider many things fun.

"I really like it! Maybe we should take it home with us when we go back. They've got so many different holidays here."

She waved the candy canes in his face before dropping him back on his pile of random Christmassy stuff.

Squall didn't care very much about importing holidays into their own home and he wasn't even sure how you were even supposed to do that either, but if anyone could, it would be Selphie. And...well, he supposed there wasn't any harm in it. Considering what Garden is, it would be pretty heartless for him to refuse to allow extra cheer whenever possible.

"Sure," he said as Selphie dropped the candy canes back onto his pile. "You figure out how to do it."

"Oh, I will!" Selphie winked at him with an especially determined smile. She'd ignore the fact that she had to get home in the first place, and that she'd been here a whole year without becoming any closer. But still.

"So...if you wanna come round to have some Christmas time at my house, you're more than welcome!"

Knowing Selphie, it would involve a lot of recruiting people to help. Just as long as it wasn't him.

Oh, who was he kidding? She would definitely try to rope him into it.

"Maybe I will," he replied to her invitation. It was a non committal answer, but at least it wasn't outright refusal.

And she probably would, since she's now seen Squall with a bundle of Christmas stuff, and will decide that this means he has some kind of friendly feelings towards it.

Maybe? What was a maybe? Selphie plucked a candy cane back from the pile, "What? You got better people to spend Christmas with?"

"No, I don't," he answered quite plainly. He was just not a celebrating kind of guy. Sometimes, a maybe from him meant that he had already made up his mind about something and wasn't willing to say what it was, but this time, it really was a maybe. "I'll go if I feel like it."

The candy cane was snapped in half, and she was quick to shove some of the sweet in her mouth. She lowered her eyes and scuffed the toe of her boot against the ground. Christmas was supposed to be for loved ones and best friends...

"Okay."

Why was she so downtrodden all of a sudden? Squall spent a moment languishing in genuine confusion before he realized just how cold what he said was.

"I...didn't mean to sound like that. Sorry, Selphie."

There's a loud cracking noise as Selphie starts to crunch through the candy cane. She shrugged a shoulder while she finished her mouthful and eventually spoke after she swallowed.

"That's okay."

And she guessed it would have to be. There were in a completely different world with completely different people. It wasn't any wonder that he wouldn't want to spend any time with her.

Squall had to wonder, was it really okay? Ever since the incident on the island, he started to think that he had to be more conscious of what he said to Selphie.

"I'm just in a bad mood today."

Worse than his usual demeanor, at any rate.

Selphie audibly swallowed what was left of her candy cane and looked at Squall with a more friendly expression.

"Why? Is something wrong?"

Stupid question, maybe, but she'd be willing to rectify the problem.

"Nothing important, just..." Usually, when Squall said something wasn't important, it often was. This was a rare case when it really was just a stupid thing bugging him irrationally. "All these people trying to get me to do things. It's annoying. I don't even know anything about this holiday."
