Lily woke much later than she usually did, having slept peacefully for the first time in a very long time in James' arms. She took her time getting showered and dressed, not seeing any reason to hurry.
When she finally comes downstairs she heads straight for the kitchen, not even noticing that someone else has been in the house or is in the garden. She sings, softly, and the sound might float outdoors if the window is open. And on such a beautiful day, why wouldn't it be?
Sirius heard the voice and closed his eyes tightly, just listening to what sounded to him like a ghost. After a little while, he summoned up his courage and went to the doorway that lead from the garden, outside.
"Have I told you, recently, that I love it when you sing?"
"Sirius!" she cried, running over to him to pull him into a hug. He looked...older. Thinner. Weaker. She hugged him tight and tried not to think about how long it had been for him.
He wrapped his arms around her gently, just savoring the fact that she was here and alive...it was almost enough to banish the images of hers and James' dead bodies that night that had been seared into his memories.
Gently, he reaches up and brushes the tear away, trying to smile for her. "Don't be, Lily, it's not like it's your fault. I'm just glad you're still here."
