For the most part, Inque had let the little monster invasion go on unchallenged. She certainly had no stake in the outcome, and some of the other residents she'd observed seemed quite capable of handling the situation on their own. Likewise, she'd been largely ignored by the creatures, in part due to the fact she was usually well hidden and also decidedly not flesh and blood. As a result, she didn't seem to register for most of the creatures, so long as she kept her distance...which is what she had been doing with this one, until some fool of a woman had to go and practically offer herself up on a silver platter.

While Inque had absolutely no reason to consider anyone living here a "friend," she also wasn't prepared to let one get mauled by the creatures. Or worse, eaten alive. Sure, she could handle death, she was even prepared to kill certain people herself, but there were certain kinds of death that she didn't believe anyone deserved. This was one of them, though honestly "death by monster" wasn't really something she'd ever ( ... )

"O-Of course I'm not!" Eruka's head whipped back and forth, so much so that the eyes on her strange hat started to go cross-eyed. "Ribbit! It came out of nowhere..."

Truth be told, it had caught her off guard. She hadn't realized things like this were roaming the streets because... well, mostly because she didn't actually have anyone she spoke to in Vatheon regularly.

Her eyes strayed to the messy remains of the creature. Inque had dispatched it so effectively and effortlessly that she was definitely intimidated...

"Who are you?"

I know how that is, no worries! inqueblots August 29 2011, 21:03:51 UTC
Well, at least she earned points for saying "who" instead of "what," Inque had to give her that much. Even if she was content to silently curse her and cast all sorts of blame her way for stupidly putting herself at such risk to begin with. In her mind, ignorance was no excuse, but she'd hold off on a lecture on the subject...for now. That weird frog noise she was making was definitely something for Inque to ponder about at another time. At the moment, there were more pressing concerns.

"Introductions are hardly important right now," Inque irritably responded, and if she had eyes to narrow in her current form, she certainly would. "You should get to safety before more of these things arrive. You've certainly made enough noise..." Well, it wasn't a full lecture, right? More like disappointed scolding, really. And she'd undoubtedly get more of it later at some point, not like Inque had anything better to do.

Embarrassment bubbles up in Eruka, just a bit. "It startled me, that's all! I-I could've taken one with a Tadpole Bomb without a problem!"

Which may have been true, if she could have made one. Not for the first time she tugged the ungainly collar.

Then her eyes widen as she spies a flash of scales. "B-Behind you!"

"I'm sure..." Inque dryly commented, not sounding as if she believed the excuse one bit. Which was appropriate, because she really didn't. Again, she'd be glaring disapprovingly, if only she had the mea-

"B-Behind you!"

Though not particularly concerned for her safety, the white eye swiveled around to the back of Inque's head anyway, just in time to spy a lunging fish creature. Unlike Eruka, she felt no need to cry out, and instead shifted her entire upper body harmlessly to the right. A few feet to the right; one of the many benefits of her "condition." She wasn't about to let the creature move on to attack the girl though, and quickly lashed out and coiled her arms around the creature's chest. She swung it against one of the many vacant buildings in the plaza with enough force to crack the facade, though still maintained her grip on the creature to keep its movement to a minimum ( ... )

But Eruka was staring at the gooey mass that had been a fish creature, her throat moving up and down like she was either trying to swallow or not vomit, her eyes wide and unblinking. The method in which Inque had dispatched the creature was too visually similar to things she had seen in the Demon God's chamber -- and the witch was going into shock.

Well this was just frustrating. No wonder she liked it more when she was being paid to just destroy things, she didn't have to concern herself with people skills. Well, outside the company of her benefactor, anyway. She lets out a long sigh before her body starts to change again. Instead of formless limbs, she grew distinctively human hands, feet, and even a hastily colored substitute for clothing. And, as the giant white eye in the center of her head began to spiral and change, she was well on her way to something resembling a more human face as well...

...and not an unpleasant looking one, at that. As for why she even bothered in the first place, well, hopefully the girl was still there enough to understand what she was saying.

"Is this better?" Inque asked, as gently as possible. While she was still considerably annoyed with the whole situation, that didn't mean she wasn't capable of hiding that displeasure. Instead she replaced it with a tone of almost motherly concern, and simply stood by with one hand resting on her hip as she waited for any sort of response. She didn't want to have to carry this girl, and it wasn't like Inque had a home of her own she could take her to (not that she needed one).

If possible she seems to freeze even more at the voice, the change in tone. Unsteadily her head comes up to regard Inque, though her eyes keep sliding back towards the dead creature.

Eventually she's able to force a hoarse croak out, followed by, "H-How... did you..."

"It's a long story," Inque sighed, partly out of continued frustration. Still, she did her best to keep any annoyance from making its way into her voice. Trying the sensible route and trying to shepherd the girl to safety didn't appear to be working, so Inque decided it might be best to try another, more personable approach. "Do you have a name?"

"Eruka..."

The witch slowly wobbles her way to her feet, though she looks ready to fall over again at any minute. Unconsciously she tries to brush off her dress, but it has creature gloop all over it now.

"I don't... remember what I came out for."

Unusual name, but it wasn't as if she was one to talk...

"Then it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Eruka. You may call me Inque," she replied, speaking as calmly and pleasantly as possible...essentially, the same facade she usually put on for potential employers. The only difference was, her lingering contempt was more out of frustration than any personal disgust for the person was dealing with. Sure, the girl definitely appeared to be foolish, but at least the inflated sense of self-importance her clients usually possessed was nowhere to be found.

"Unless it was sustenance, it's hardly important at the moment," Inque explained, "Do you have any friends who can take you to safety? Or family to pick you up?" Granted, Inque had yet to see any motorized vehicles in the city, even of the primitive and outdated wheeled variety, but it was a question worth asking.

The steady tone and calm demeanor helped Eruka more than Inque might've seen visibly. She shook her head slowly when she was asked if she had any friends or family who would come for her. The only people she technically knew were the others from Death City, but she couldn't call them. She just tried to stay out of their way.

"There's no one. I-It's all right, ribbit. I can get back now."
