It was a dark and stormy night.
Somewhere else.
In Vatheon however, everything was still. The water above the bubble was as calm as ever, the faint light of the moon just before dawn filtering through. Only those close enough to the holes that led to the underground caves might have heard the first sounds. It started with a low, groaning creak from somewhere deep inside the musty, dark catacombs; the sounds of something crumbling, rocks crashing and then came the slithering. It started quiet, but it quickly picked up, and soon it became accompanied by eerie chirps and shrieks. It grew louder and louder until it became impossible to ignore, impossible to sleep through.
And then suddenly it stopped. As quickly as it had come, as quickly was it gone again. The air was thick with silence, but just when people were starting to roll over in their beds again, ready to dismiss the odd sounds as a dream, they appeared.
It started with one hand.
Well, fin.
It rose from one of the holes, gripping the crumbling sides, before the creature pulled itself out, supported on the backs of its brethren. The moon light, while not strong, was enough to illuminate it as it crawled from the dark dank depths. Its scaly flesh hung around the creature like an ill-fitted coat, bones poking through it in disarray. And while it had hands and rose up on two feet, there was certainly nothing human about the creature. It turns it flat face and looked around, its lidless eyes slowly tracing over the city in front of it.
Behind it, similar creatures crawled out of the catacombs, each different in size, in colour, but not in monstrosity. Five, six, seven, it didn't matter; the sounds from below were enough to indicate that it was only the beginning.
The largest of the creatures tossed back its head screeching sharply before it started forward.
The invasion had begun.
