[ Zelda misses the alchemy, but not the call. The man gets a friendly smile as she pauses. ]

Are you new here?

[Ah, friendly locals! Best way to get information. Ed puts a little smile on his own face.]

New? Just traveling, last I knew. But maybe you can help me out and remind me where it is I've ended up?

I am afraid you are in a place called Vatheon. I would tell you its location, but all we know is we are beneath the sea, in some world or another.

Vatheon, huh? Well, that explains the pressure difference and the sea smell...

The way you say that makes it seem like you break this news to a lot of people. This place take people often?

Quite often. There seems to be a wave of newcomers every month.

Sounds like it was my turn then... [He puts an almost ironic grin on his fave.]

So what are we here for?

It seems we are here to power the barrier keeping this place from the ocean around it.

Sapping our energy? That's pretty warped. [It's a scientists view, but one Edward kinda holds dear.]

Yes, that it is. But there seems little we can do to resist.

I suppose that's their attempt at equalizing the exchange. Whether it actually is, though, is up to the individual.

[He's got stuff to do back home damn it.]

So that's the cost of being here. What else should I know about?

You should know about the curses. Every once in a while, for a week, this place curses us in some strange manner. For example, the first curse I experienced, this place came under siege by giant reptiles. The next one, however, turned the entire city into a sort of giant game to be played.

Curses, huh? [Giant reptiles? Giant game? This just keeps sounding better and better.]

And let me guess, no way to get out.

That is correct, yes.

Heh, figures, doesn't it...

Is there a correlation as to how long people stay here on average? [How long would he have to wait...?]

Not that I can tell. Some barely stay a week, others have been here for months on end.

[ Pause. ]

And some of us leave for short periods of time only to be brought back.

Hm. [Scratch that theory, Ed. You're stuck here for a while little buddy.]

It sounds to me like we're at the discretion of someone else. I don't necessarily like that...
