[There's quite a ruckus going on in the forest. Crashes, roars, and... a sandstorm? It's not a massive one, but it's engulfing a 20 foot radius with blowing debris.

[Nope! Her reaction time is pretty good - she'll catch you right in hand, and shield you until the sandstorm dies down with both hands.]

[Considering that furball usually catches him in her mouth, Cynthia's hands are still a comfortable and much preferred alternative. He'll thank her for the sweet catch in a moment, he's still a bit dizzy.]

[She'll take off her handkerchief and grin down at him.]

[She sets Issun on her shoulder, pulling out a water bottle and holding it up for him to use.]

[He briefly considers using Waterspout to get the water out of the bottle, but nah, he hasn't had enough practice with that technique yet. He's sure accidentally spraying Cynthia in the face is not a thing he wants to chance right now, so he'll just drink from the bottle like a normal person.]

What was up with that, anyway? Didn't think ya could get freak sandstorms underwater.

Well, that was Garchomp here. Pokemon have elemental alignments and can have some control over them - Garchomp has two "types". One is ground, and one is dragon.

Ground I can see, but... "dragon"? What kinda element is that supposed to be?

They're called "types" rather than elements, because they're not strictly elements of nature. There's fire, water, grass, et cetera, but there's also the Fighting type, or of course Dragon type.

They're identified based on their strengths and weaknesses to other types. Fire trumps grass, water trumps fire, so on and so forth. There are some more rare types. Dragon specifically is not effective against anything other than dragon - a dragon type attack will hurt another dragon. But defensively, dragons are immune to things like fire, their only weaknesses being to dragon types and ice types.

It's a surprisingly complex and organized system, for something that was created in nature.
