[He'd made a promise, and that was what was running through his mind as he walked with his head bowed slightly and his hands in his pockets. He'd made a promise to protect Selphie and she was missing.

Minato gets a flick to the head while he's deep in thought. A simple gesture to get his attention.
Motochika doesn't even bother to say anything. Just a quirked brow and his thought bubble says it all-
'You look down, kid'.]

There's something or someone dangerous here. Who means harm to innocent people.
[Flashes of faces--Selphie and Mion--before his expression sets.]
Reply
Innocent soldiers, both his men and people from another army, being impaled by arrows on a boat- it was meant to be a simple prisoner exchange but no.
Bastards.]
So? What're you gonna do about it?
Reply
A breath.]
I suppose first I have to figure out who it is. I can't do anything until then.
[Even though the other has already made his (its?) moves. He knew it had.]
Reply
Can't do much of anything with that face, kid.
S'not the right kind of fight to be looking for.
[Burned down villages- kids seeking revenge? That's the analogy going on in his mind right now.]
Reply
[A quiet sigh. He's not the sort to go after revenge--he's not hot-headed enough.]
There has to be a way to stop it from harming other people, though.
Reply
If you don't get eaten by it too with a long face like that.
[There's this image of something remniscent of an Asian Loch Ness monster gobbling up Minato and swallowing him whole in Motochika's thought bubble.
If Minato's not specifying a gender, he's making it a sea monster.]
Reply
He blinks at the thought bubble before shaking his head, smiling slightly.]
Right. I don't plan on letting it get me; that wouldn't solve anything.
['Should've done this sooner' becomes clear for a moment--not a regret so much as a resigned understanding of the situation. Selphie...]

Go big or go home. What, you lose your girlfriend to this terrible beastie?
['still hiding things' pops up in his thought bubble, which as returned to its convoluted state of thought clouds that resemble static]
Reply
[A few images in his thoughts--dinosaurs and an exhausted Selphie--until he shakes his head.]
She is a friend, though, and...I did make a promise to protect her.
[...He takes his promises very seriously.]
Reply
Now you're thinking you didn't do your part.
[He'll just wait for confirmation.]
Reply
Somewhat. It's probably true that there was something I could have done, but it's also true that it would be impossible for me to protect her all the time.
[...'still hurts, though...' and 'promised...']
Reply
Too much imposed logic.
It doesn't seem to be working, kid. You need a new tactic to deal with your guilt, disappointment- whatever you call it.
Reply
A new tactic?
[He's never been particularly good at dealing with guilt, other than to work harder to keep it from happening again--]
Reply
I'd say you need a new tactic. This is just dumb.
Reply
But then he blinks, and the image shifts away to a general hum of agreement.]
That's true. I should at least start looking for the culprit; it's difficult to say when it'll strike next.
