Katsu and Naoya were hiding something from him.
To be fair, Naoya's pretty much always keeping something from them. He could tell Atsuro he's actually an alien from outer space sent to observe a special human for evolutionary purposes, and he'd seriously consider its possibility simply because someone so tight-lipped about everything said so (not just because his idol said so, really!). But as for Katsu, they were best friends. They shouldn't have any reason to hide things from each other. Okay, so this Katsu is pretty clearly not the one from his timeline, but all the same, he's still Katsu to him no matter what decision he makes. And that makes him his best friend regardless of timeline screwiness.
...Okay, he'll admit that logic may be a little flimsy at points if poke, but he hopes the sentiment's enough to make up for it.
Anyway, back to topic! Those two were hiding something. Hiding something big. And he didn't think it would be wise this time to dive in headfirst and hope for the best. At least, not this time.
Being someone who believed in the power of friendship, he eventually decides to ask one of Naoya's friends (even if he won't admit it) if they have an idea about what's going on. It's a start, right?
