Selphie had her back turned, tilting her head very carefully to peer through the window of the restaurant. What if her date was already inside? Or what if he just chose not to turn up? It was a blind date, sure, but what if they had heard who they were matched with? Or what if...

But she was cut short in her anxiety as she heard her name spoken by a familiar voice, and she turned rather quickly, her smile brighting as she saw him. "Hi Axel!" Fortunately, Selphie was balanced on her little heels, and she took a couple of steps towards him.

Just saying hello to Axel. But then - Oh! He was here at the same time she was, and it didn't look like he was just happening to pass by. Her date? Her date was Axel? Selphie paused, feeling the heat rising to her cheeks, the blush hopefully hidden beneath the slight rouge on her skin.

Selphie lowered her head and glanced down, her eyes widening as she saw how closely the colour of her dress resembled the colour of Axel's hair. She takes a deep breath, not quite knowing what to say or where to look. Eventually, she lifted her face to him, offering a shy little smile. "Looking for your date?"

Why did she look so awkward? This was a good thing, right? Now they didn't have to spend the evening with someone they couldn't stand, at least. The real implications of a "date" were mostly lost on Axel--even when he'd had a heart he hadn't really used it in the pursuit of romance, and even if he had used it to those ends once upon a time, his brief stint with Larxene surely would have taught him better than to ever try it again.

Axel rubbed the back of his neck and gave her a half shrug.

"Something like that," he admitted. "I didn't even sign up for this gig--I'm gonna strangle Xigbar with his own ponytail." He gave a helpless chuckle. "I guess if it's you it's okay; I had a portal all ready to go in case it turned out to be someone awful." Like Larxene. He suppressed the urge to shudder at the very idea. Glancing down at his coat and then at Selphie's dress, he tilted his head a bit. "Admittedly I'm feeling a tad underdressed now, though."

Oh... so he didn't even really want to be there. Selphie lowered her head and flushed gently, narrowing her eyes at her choice of dress and shoes. It was painfully obvious that she had tried to look as pretty as possible. But she'd come off just feeling stupid.

"You know what? We don't have to do this. We'll just catch up with icecream some other time, right?"

Selphie wrung her hands together: he had said that it was at least okay if it was her. But still...

Axel made a face. "Hah?" How had she somehow made him feel like a jerk without saying it? Waving one hand, he shook his head. "Well we're here, we might as well do something, right?" He gestured vaguely at her. "I mean, you got yourself all dolled up for this; it'd be a waste to just go home."

He didn't really have anything better to do, but he had a feeling if he added that part it would hurt her feelings. Sure, he hadn't signed up for this, but he liked Selphie well enough; might as well make the best of it. He tilted his head toward the restaurant.

"Come on, we should at least have dinner; I'm starved, how about you?" He glanced through the big front windows. "This place looks pretty swanky--good thing most stuff is free, huh? I doubt I could afford this place on an Organization salary."

"Okay!" She knew too well that Axel could just disappear whenever he chose. But then... he also could have avoided her as soon as he saw her, and headed back. He might only be acting out of sheer politeness, to keep her happy, but that was definitely good enough. And besides, he was right - she'd put in way too much effort to decide to just quit.

"It does look really good. And I bet the desserts are delicious!" Selphie, being ever the gentleman, stepped forward and pushed open the door, holding it open for Axel. To anyone else, that might look a bit odd, but what did Selphie know about what was and wasn't supposed to happen on dates. She drifted into the restaurant, open mouthed and amazed at how beautiful it was.

What anyone who knew Axel well learned very quickly was that he... really wasn't terribly polite. If he did something, it was either because he wanted to, because he felt obligated (read: because Roxas had pouted at him), or because it benefited him somehow. It was really only the second option that had brought Axel to the meeting place for this potentially ill-fated death, but it was the former that made him stay. Boisterous as she was, he liked Selphie well enough, and ditching her would have made her sad and him a total jerk. And while Axel was pretty okay with being a jerk most of the time, that was a level of jerk he rarely engaged in deliberately.

Fighting the urge to chuckle when she opened the door for him, Axel reached out to hold it as she followed him inside, and he shook two fingers at the hostess. They followed the hostess as she led them toward some open tables near the back, and Axel mostly tuned out her nattering about the day's specials. He was more interested in the way the ceiling looked like it had stars strung from it, and the way the wall fountains made the whole place seem like some exotic mountain retreat or something. It was quite a place, he had to admit.

When the hostess showed them their table, he snagged the leg of the far chair with his foot and spun it around so he could sit backwards in it. ... Not terribly gentlemanly, but he wasn't really trying to make that sort of impression. Snagging a menu he flipped it open and then glanced at Selphie over the top.

"They really pulled out all the stops with this place, huh," he mused, his eyes winging briefly to the dark ceiling above them. "Hope the food's as impressive as the presentation."

Selphie too would have been clueless if anyone had asked her what the specials were. Really, they could have been anything. The woman could have asked Selphie a question and she wouldn't have noticed - the place really was spectacular, and Selphie flushed to be there. She wondered if she'd ever had dinner anywhere so pretty; dinner usually was a hot dog and icecream affair at a cafe.

Selphie laughed as Axel took his seat; it was more amusing than anything - she was hardly one to turn her nose up and anyone's behaviour. She, on the other hand, was too busy staring at the ceiling, so that she tripped on the table leg and fell into her seat.

She hid behind the menu, lowering it so that she could look at him as she spoke, and she nodded brightly, her eyes also going to the ceiling, "This place is so awesome! I bet the food is super yummy!"
