Akito hasn't A-Ted properly in years.
There were a few reasons for this. First because he was too scared to, after witnessing the blood he'd spilt; hands soaked in crimson and face warm with another person's life fluid. Agito came for him then, and for years after that Akito was eternally grateful for his cowardice because if he had been brave and strong Agito never would have been born.
Then he never A-Ted because Agito Ran in his place. It was like that for a long time. Agito Ran for Akito. For their father-brother. He Ran alongside Akira until they were betrayed. Agito's life was Running, and so there was no reason for Akito to ever again. Which leads to the second reason - more fear. If he started to Run again, what would become of Agito? To fight in place of him was why he existed. He existed because Akito couldn't Run. So what would happen if he could again?
The third reason was even more fear. There was no place for Akito anymore. The battles were too dangerous, and the enemies too strong. If he tried to Run again not only would he die and take Agito with him, it would ruin Kogarasumaru. His new family.
But then the battles became more and more difficult and dangerous. Agito couldn't defeat their enemies on his own, and so Akito would loan him his strength. At first he did this from the safety of their mind, hiding behind Agito's awareness and simply pushing strength into his other half and their shared body. As time progressed he became less scared - played a more active part in their fights. He comes out of the protective cage of their mind and lets his consciousness stay at the forefront, observing the battles like a ghost. Akito can be Agito's guardian then, pointing out things to him that his protector often misses in fights.
Now Akito feels the pressing need to Run again. To reclaim the strength he spent his childhood struggling to earn. He was the Fang King before Agito and before Akira. He learnt the skill their mother failed to, setting the base for Agito to perfect it to a degree that would shock even the first King of their Road. His body has only gotten stronger as it's grown, tended to so carefully by both his father-brother and Agito. There shouldn't be any reason why he couldn't take back a piece of the Road he created for them.
Except that he's still frightened. He hasn't formed a Fang since before Agito was born. While his body is ready and waiting, his mind remains frozen. A battle level of two-hundred and he can't even do a simple trick.
You don't have to, Akito.
"But what if something happens to you?" Akito readies their body again, blinking a few times to clear his eye of frustrated tears. "And Kazu and Buccha and everyone aren't here with us. What happens if Ikki-kun loses his strength?"
Stop worrying so much about that Crow. Even Agito worries though, and he can't hide it from Akito. He'll be fine.
"But there's no sky, Agito! If it is killing us, what do you think it does to him?" He kicks out, but doesn't have the motors to their Regalia on and so it's just a simple movement. It's progress though, and Akito can feel Lind somewhere in their mind, both proud and amused. "I have to try and be strong for him! I have to be strong enough to catch him when he falls. There's nobody else here to help!"
Agito falls silent at that, knowing that it's true. Ever since learning how far in the past Ikki is from they haven't known what to do. They can't tell him anything because his heart will break all over again. The one person Akito could trust enough to share his secrets with now doesn't even know who their enemies are - considers one of them a role model, even! Some kind of an older brother.
He can't tell Ikki about his own history, either. It wouldn't be fair to burden him like that. So his brother is really his father. He's really... ten? Nine? He doesn't know... Lind is Gazelle, and Gazelle is his mother. And wasn't Lind the first person in this body? That was what he... she? had said when he-she first woke up again. So what does that make Akito? And Agito? This body may be the child of Kaito, but...
It's too complicated! Akito grits his teeth and holds back his tears. So his whole perception of life and his place in it has shifted. So what? It's not going to kill him! And it's not like he's changed, anyway. Akito and Agito are still Akito and Agito, even if Lind is...
Stop thinking about it! Fuck! It's too weird! So gross!
"It's not gross! I'm glad that he's... he's my Papa!"
Because it all makes sense to him now. Why Kaito kept them locked up. Why he did everything that he did. It wasn't out of cruelty, but fear - something Akito understands all too well. Kaito was scared of losing them again. Losing his child and his lover once was hard enough... The fear of losing them a second time must have been so strong! Their cage kept them close to him - close enough to keep safe. If he gave them too much freedom they could wander too far and get hurt.
"I know why he did it, and I forgive him for it." Akito positions their body once more, this time pressing down on their Regalia to get the wheels spinning. His body shivers with a fear that he can't shake off quite yet, but he's determined to be a Storm Rider again so that he can help instead of be helpless.
"Now hurry and help me make a Fang, okay? I can't do it by myself!"
Agito obeys, whipped as he is by his other half, and it doesn't take much longer for Akito to shoot out a weak Fang at the tree they use to practice on. A bit of bark flies off, and Akito falls to his knees with a shaky breath. So he can at least manage to shoot one off. Even if it scares him, he can still do it.
His wings aren't as broken as he thought they were, yet somehow he still finds himself feeling sad.
