Kenshin was quite unfamiliar about this Christmas. It was a day of giving, a festival he'd never heard of. Then again, with Japan in such turmoil, giving wasn't exactly on everyone's mind at the moment.
Kenshin had arrived in the plaza in his usual full regalia, admiring the decorations. He noted the girl on the ladder, may Bishamonten's might keep her safe up there, and her unusual style of dress. "Do be careful, my lady."
At the sudden voice, Selphie started at the top of the ladder. She wobbles a little but manages eventually to gain her balance. Selphie turns to face the speaker, but in doing so falls the final few steps of ladder, landing in a heap of tinsel and mistletoe.
With quick reflexes, Kenshin stopped her fall, catching her gracefully in his arms. Despite his small wiry frame, he was quite strong and had no trouble at all catching her. "Thank Bishamonten you were not injured with such a fall, my lady."
Selphie blinks up at him, quite confused as to what had just happened. But she smiles brightly, though she has no idea what Bisha...Bisha...what had he said?
He hadn't made a move to put her down, but she was more than welcome to stand if she pleased. He simply smiled softly. "What were you doing which required you to place your safety at potential risk?"
Eventually Selphie moved herself into a standing position, brushing down her dress to be sure it hadn't rolled up... She turns to him then, smiling as she answers his question.
"I was decorating!" Seemingly very pleased with her efforts, Selphie raises a hand to point to the tinsel, lights, and mistletoe above their heads.
He gazed up, admiring the unusual decorations. He'd never seen anything quite like them but they certainly were flashy, just his style. "They are quite beautiful. Are they for Christmas?" The word came out oddly when he'd said it, with a soft Japanese accent as he pronounced the foreign word. He'd heard of this Christmas celebration but didn't know anything about the traditions or decorations.
Selphie's clearly pleased with the compliment and she moves her gaze slowly from the stranger to the decorations and back again. He certainly looked interesting...
"Uh huh! For Christmas! I've never had a Christmas before. Does it look okay?"
Interesting was definitely one way to describe the odd samurai. He liked flashy yet elegant attire which almost seemed opposite of his calm demeanor (well until one saw him fight, then the flashiness made sense).
"I am unclear what Christmas entails," he replied. "However I find the entire ensemble of decorations quite exquisite." He offered her a soft smile.
Selphie eyed him over slowly, tilting her head while she wondered if he was some kind of prince or something. She opens her mouth, as though to ask if he was maybe Santa, but then he said he didn't know much about it.
"I don't know anything either! I just like to decorate!" Beaming at her new friend, "I'm glad you like them! And thanks for saving me!"
"I am glad you were not hurt in the fall," he smiled. "Forgive my rudeness, I am Uesugi Kenshin." He offered an elegant formal bow. "Your name, if you will, my lady?"
Kenshin smiled softly. An interesting lady she was. Her name was definitely foreign, something which he'd not yet grown accustomed to. He wasn't particularly interested in foreign relations, more with the situation Japan had found itself in the time he'd arrived here.
"A pleasure as well, Selphie-dono." He took a guess at which name was the personal name. "How long have you been in Vatheon?"
Selphie can't help but giggle again, eyeing over his flashy uniform - there was a lot to take in.
"Dono? What's a dono...?"
She let's the question linger while she figures out the answer to the next question, "Uhm...a week, maybe two weeks?" She nods. Two weeks seem more like it.
"-dono is an honorific of respect, much like Lord or Lady," Kenshin explained, hoping the explanation translated properly into whatever common language everyone spoke here.
"Little longer than I," Kenshin mused aloud. Some had been here for months, others days. Such a strange place it was.

"My name's Selphie Tilmitt. Very pleased to meet you...sir."
The sir is added at the end cautiously. His manner of speaking is interesting, and amusing.

She glanced him over, guessing that he might be quite unhappy here. At least, he looked important.
"You do know that no one knows how to get out of here...?"
