Libertarianism

I've run into several people lately who smile and nod politely when they hear I'm a libertarian. I had become increasingly convinced that nobody new what that really meant. I'm putting this up here so I can direct people to it.

I didn't know you were Libertarian either.

Some things I agree with, others I don't.

Yeah, I think politics is about picking the side you agree with the most. Libertarians always remain true on 3 main principles.

Smaller government, lower taxes, and more freedom.

I tend to lean back and forth from Libertarian to Democrat.. I do believe in a lot of the social services the Dem's promote.. but maybe not to the extent at time. I like the Libertarian view of government in politics, not personal lives.

I think some social services are good, but need help. Welfare (with reforms that make it harder to be a free ride for some people), Social security (not a bad thing, but I do believe that if I could invest and save my own money, I'd have more when I retire), unemployment (very little of this is government money, they enforce businesses to pay when they fire without cause).

I can't think of to many more I like, and when I talk to people they can't think of to much more they do either. Health care, schools and things of that nature sure do need a face lift, but I'm just not sure I trust any government to fix things like that.

Government in financial institutions should be right out. Sorry to say that the economic issues of the day are the doing of greedy individuals and firms who sold more than they should have. There are already laws to punish them if that's the case.
