[For Starbuck]

Kara Thrace has never struck Lew as a woman particularly inclined towards the traditional idea of romance. She's as independent as they come, male or female, and he'd never dream of belittling that. In fact, it's one of the things he likes about her best -- She's a woman that demands respect, that deserves it. She knows what she wants, and is ( Read more... )

Kara herself hadn't known what to wear, but between the green cargo pants and tanktops and the single dress she owned, there was really only one choice. She'd already worn the black cotton dress several times before, enough so that the depth of color had begun to fade under the island sun, but it was clean and only slightly wrinkled, and she had to say as she walked towards the Compound, it was cooler in a skirt.

She saw Nixon before he saw her, just the back of his head where he waited at the Compound, and the hint of something orange in his hands. Kara swallowed down the sudden swell of nerves at the sight and tugged at the hem of her dress. She wished she'd kept her boots, rather than the simple black flats on her feet. At least then something about the situation would be familiar. It wasn't that she was afraid of men, or even of attention. It was that it was this kind of attention that had thrown her so far from her comfort zone, but Kara put on her gameface, looking not unlike she did in the cockpit, aside from the dress ( ... )

Lew turns, his face splitting with a smile when he sees her. "Hey yourself," he greets in return, and motions to her with his free hand. "You look great. My ego really doesn't need to be any bigger, you didn't have to wear a dress for me."

She looks a little tense, but it's not entirely unexpected. Hell, he's a little tense himself, he's just exceptional at hiding it. The shot he drank before leaving the house didn't hurt, either. He holds the flowers her way, trying to keep it casual.

"I don't know how they do things where you come from, but I was taught that when you take a lady to dinner, you bring her flowers. And, I thought you might like them, too. Don't feel like you have to keep them to spare my ego, though. The dress more than makes up for it."

"Right," said Kara. She eyed the flowers before she reached out her hand to take them. They smelled good - she could tell as much even before she'd pulled them towards herself, and she wondered what she was meant to do with them all night. Carry them, she supposed, and punch anyone who dared crack a smile.

"Thanks," she told him, again picking at the dress. "I figured a tanktop wasn't going to cut it," she said, and swallowed. "I didn't bring you anything."

That makes Lew chuckle, but it's warm. He shakes his head. "You not standing me up is plenty," he points out, and then motions towards the path away from the Compound. "Shall we?" he asks.

"To the Hub, right?" Kara asked, starting towards the path. If not the kitchen, than it must be the Hub.

She tried holding the flowers loose in her hand, but they felt stupid hanging there, so she kept them close to her chest. She smiled slightly. "Who cooked?"

"Actually, we're going back to the Club," Lew answers, then hesitates. "If that's alright. I've been assured that both Buck and Dick will be staying out very late." He tries a reassuring smile and wants to place his palm against Kara's lower back, to guide her in the right direction but mostly just to touch her. He shoves his hand in his pocket instead.

"As for the food, you will be glad to know it wasn't me," he answers with a laugh. "That was Gene and Shari. It's amazing what a little booze will buy you in this place."

"Good thing you've got endless currency," said Kara, tracking the abortive movement of his hand. She raised her eyes to his, and then her eyebrows. The cheeky impression alone restored much of her footing. "You anticipating a long night, sir?"

"If there's one thing being in the army has taught me, it's better safe than sorry," Lew replies with a smirk, glad to see that Kara's relaxed a little, even if she's got the wrong impression. Things happen, sure, but he's not planning much beyond dinner and some good company.

"You never know what might happen," he adds as he leads her through the jungle. "We might stay up all night having deep philosophical conversation."

"Does that include belching the alphabet?" Kara asked him with a sideways glance. "I'm pretty sure that's all my last late night conversation consisted of."

"If I end up belching the alphabet, things will definitely have gone differently than I planned," Lew answers, chuckling as they make their way into the clearing. It amazes him still that a woman as extraordinary as Kara has never been on a proper date before.

The porch on the Officer's Club is wide and populated with several tables and chairs. For lounging, primarily, but at one end Lew's set a table up with place settings, ready for the food that he's left inside. Instinctively, he holds his hand out to Kara when they reach the front steps.

"Wow," said Kara, taking in the scene. It looked nice, but her obvious pleasure turned to puzzlement at the sight of his hand.

She took it in hers, hesitating a moment longer before she put a foot on the steps. "Girls have trouble walking where you're from, Captain?" she asked him with a grin. Actually, now that she'd seen some of the shoes they wore on Earth...

"Insurance," Lew explains as they make their way up the stairs. "If you trip and break something, I don't get a kiss goodnight." Or anything else, as the case may be. "You going to examine my motives if I pull out your chair for you, too?"

"Yes," said Kara, but she stood next to her chair, watching him with one eyebrow raised. It was an odd experience for her, but she couldn't say it was unpleasant, though Kara'd never muster the patience for similar courtesy on a longterm basis. She just wasn't the type of person to wait for someone to do things for her.

"Good. I'd respect you less if you didn't," Lew's quick to reply, and he pulls the chair out with the sort of efficiency that can only come from practice. When Kara sits, he touches the the back of her neck briefly, just a skimming of fingers against warm skin and soft hair.

"I'll be right back," he assures her, and ducks inside to fetch the food, hoping it's still warm enough.
