There are two distinctly separate parts of Lew that are observing and remarking on his current situation: Lewis Nixon as charming date and Lewis Nixon as best friend. They've never existed simultaneously before, and it seems unnatural for them to start now, because they seldom agree. He keeps swinging back and forth so much he's starting to feel bi-polar.
Setting the table for a dinner date with Dick-as-Rita is like the ultimate finish to one hell of a strange, fucked-up day. Lew nearly screwed Buck earlier for crissakes, and there were so many different motivations to do it he can't sort out which to settle on. Less likely to be a problem with Dick, and thank Christ for that; Dick's not going to get in his face or throw down the gauntlet, and Lew's just got to keep his wits about him. Surely he can manage that. Mostly.
