Griff is absolutely terrified of spiders, but I've had both a tarantula and python as a pet. Not at the same time, though. :D

How exotic! They must be delicate to look after. How did you have space for a python? I was once considering taking some small pet snake, but then decided that I might be too afraid to take care of it. I'm not really scared of snakes but if I was going to have one as a pet, I would have had to be a little more confident about it. :P

Cousin It (the tarantula) was really mellow for a spider. He was very slow and calm and I'd take him out and let him sit on the bed next to me to watch tv and he's just find a spot and sit there. Never tried to skitter away or anything. He was awesome ( ... )

That's so sweet! He sounds more harmless than my rabbit, who sometimes watches TV with me too but mostly tries to nibble on the pillows... My spider phobia is just illogical. :)

Ah, all right. You can probably tell I know nothing about pythons! That's really interesting, I had no idea they could be such excellent pets. I knew people kept iguanas like that, but they're a little different, what with the four legs and all.

You seem like a REALLY responsible pet owner, not only with these two but also with the dog situation you hopefully got out of. Unfortunately more than what can be said for most people. I sometimes wonder whether keeping pets is ethical, but as can be seen even in my own life, my desire to have a furry companion weighed more than my ethical questioning. Out of curiosity, what was it that made you choose a tarantula and a python, and eventually a dog and cat - such different species?

Well growing up we always had dogs and cats. I've always been interested in animals and I always wanted exotic pets growing up. My tarantula was allowed because my father was afraid of snakes and vetoed that. When my parents separated and Cousin It had passed away (presumably of old age - he was an adult when I got him and I had him almost four years and males tend to only live 4-5 years) my mom said I could have the snake I'd been dreaming of owning for years and years.

I've just always wanted to experience different animals and if I think I can give them a wonderful quality of life then I'm apt to want to give it a whirl owning one. xD

As for the dog situation, he's still with my MIL's exboyfriend and is doing well there. The ex loves the dog and the dog loves getting to spend half the day outside and the other half inside, so hopefully that arrangement will stick.

Lucky you, we only ever had cats until my sister's allergy was diagnosed (and later mine), and after years of begging and praying we finally took two rabbits, who lived in a shed until one of them passed away and we wanted the other one to have at least some company and took him inside. My parents would never have been that understanding towards our wishes. :) I think it can be amazingly educational to have pets, even more so if you get a chance to own several different kinds. It's just that it can go so horribly wrong, too. Glad to hear that wasn't the case with your animals. Sadly, the death of my first rabbit was entirely my fault and it was UGLY (fly strike), but now I know better and I'd never allow that to happen again.

Yeah, I meant I hope that Mal's transfer to the ex brought an end to your problems with it. I'm finally keeping up with my friends page. :)
