At Target, if we really wanted to, we could squeeze 4 pallets into the walk-in freezer and 3 into the walk-in cooler. We usually keep one or two out on the floor to work, so that gives us enough room to maintain 9 pallets. We usually only get about 5 pallets per order anyway, so it's rarely an issue.
We get our orders on Monday and Thursday, and we personally place the orders so we know what to expect. However, when we get new products, they send them to us whenever they are available instead of waiting for us to order them. That way they are ready as soon as the planogram team needs them and we don't have empty shelves while we're waiting for new products. The freezers are about to reset so we had 2 pallets worth of transition product leftover from Thursday's order.
The new order came Monday morning. We received 6 pallets worth of food: 3 for the freezers and 3 for the coolers. The pallets were stacked too tall to even fit out the door, so we broke them down onto flats. 1 pallet-sized flat for the freezer and 1 pallet-sized flat for the cooler.
Let's count. We have enough room for 9 pallets. We already had 2 in the freezer, plus we received 4 more that morning. We then received 4 pallets for the cooler. This makes 10 pallets. It's starting to become a stretch.
Ideally, we would have 1 team member per pallet to help work the order. We had 4. They gave us 1 extra team member, adding up to 5. Fabulous.
My shift ended at 1 and I couldn't stay any later because I had to go to work at the spa. Jaimie left at 1 to go to an interview in Aberdeen, but was coming back in a couple of hours. So at 1, we lost the two most capable team members for the department. Also at 1, C&S called to say that they found 2 more pallets of ours on the truck and they were on their way back to give them to us.
For those who aren't keeping track: this makes 12 pallets, 3 team members. 3 pallets over capacity, 9 team members short.
At 8:30, I recieved a message from Jaimie saying that she had just left and that they ended up damaging out and throwing away 2 entire pallets worth of food because there was nobody to work it but nowhere to store it so it all melted.
EDIT: For those who don't know, a pallet is about 3 feet by 3 feet and these must have been packed as high as I am tall. That's a lot of food to waste.
