So, a friend of mine (let's call her Sparrow) has a Chinese straight sword, or jian, that she bought from her tai chi instructor a couple of years ago. It's an old sword. Like, Qing Dynasty old. The first time I saw it was well before she purchased it, and it was in decent condition. It wasn't in great condition, but it wasn't going down the ( Read more... )

My Dad grew up in Maine Farm Country. As is standards for males in said lands at age 10 he got a single-shot .22, at age 15 he got a shotgun. He left the farm lands for the "Big City" of Portland, Maine. He then left said guns in the basement to rust solid.

Now granted neither are valuble peices, and honestly neither are peices I'd buy for my collection (though a .22 Chipmunk rifle WOULD be nice for when Weer'd-lings come around) but these are my FATHER'S guns! I do have in my collection a 1950s era Remington 722 that was bought by Mrs. Weer'ds Grandfather as a gopher gun for his farm, then graduated to my Father-in-Law's deer rifle, and now is a VERY fun distance plinker and a piss-poor bench-rest rifle for me. I'll NEVER sell this gun for ANY price. Its value of a family heirloom is priceless. I just wish I could have some from my own family....

Once somthing is destroyed it will never return, and many things if cared for will last forever (My oldest gun is a Colt 1908 .25 made in 1917, it still shoots like a charm...sadly .25 ACP is EXPENSIVE!!)

Everything old tells a tale, neglecting those things silences that voice forever.

Best of luck restoring the sword.

Any chance for pix?

Hey, sorry it took me so long to respond here.

Thanks for sharing about your father's guns. There is definitely great value in family heirlooms. My family doesn't have any, unfortunately. Our extended relatives are estranged, and we suffered a house fire back in 2000.

I finally have that sword and will see if I can post pics. Dear Reader has a digital camera she might let me borrow.
