A difference in choreo

I think I realise why I have a hard time taking Jpop groups seriously. Or modern Jpop that's post noughties era in general (I think my old brain is showing). Naturally there are some fabulous Jpop tunes from 80s and 90s and I discovered them through the power of Anime but I have yet to sit down through a pop singer or pop band's discography religiously. I should amend this issue when I'm not too tied down by metal.

From the top of my head the pop artists I have listened to are Utada Hikaru, BoA (okay she's Korean but I got into her via her Jpop songs), Nakashima Mika, Kotani Kinya and lots of Seiyuu who have released their own albums or character image albums based on the Anime they worked on. I think the Japanese pop music I do sit through has a slightly alternate feeling. As in...it's not always sugary cute. Could be pop rock or straight up rock or metal. OK Wakeshima Kanon is like neoclassical dark wave/gothic which is why her music attracted me in the first place. Buri Guri is alt rock and their vocalist Kawase Tomoko had released solo material under two identities by the name of tommy february6 and tommy heavenly6 which show her various music styles.

One reason I'm all *baffled expression* might be from watching the Jpop choreography. It's like there is a huge difference between Kpop and Jpop artists dancing. I know hip hop has a following in Japan like in Korea which is a country that has a major influence of US music. But when I watch various Jpop performances with a lot of dancing it feels...different. I'm not sure I could count Kpop bands doing Japanese songs and dancing to them. Does Jpop dance choreography feel cheesier compared to Kpop? I think Chinese pop has a bit of corny choreography too at times. Oh bless them all.

Idea behind this post came from watching this collaboration between w~inds and G-Dragon. I heard the song on Big B Radio after recognising GD's rapping and excitedly went on Youtube to check the video out. If you have 3D glasses put them on :D

GD might be younger than these guys however his charisma level is something else. I can't stop laughing over his afro in the first part but his rapping lets him off. His second hairstyle is slightly redeemable haha. Ignoring the crazy hair if he sat like that in his chair he's got my attention. Suave style.

You can see more of his 'boss' energy during this live performance. He just owned the stage over w-inds. I don't think this collab means w-inds sound rubbish in any way. Their singing and dancing style is just very, very different.

It's funny how Big Bang's Japanese music or collabs with Japanese artists reminds me I should go back to listening to Japanese music again. I'll get back on track with it one day. Maybe Do As Infinity and Every Little Thing discography will be on my list.
