Little bit on House

I must say that I didn't notice the new use of tags until just recently. Hmm, interesting little things they are. Might come in handy.

But onto something else

Ever since I read in the Metro that Hugh Laurie did an American accent to audition in a new TV series (and convinced some of the directors with his alternative form of speaking), I became intrigued and wanted to know what was successful about this US medical series. I struck lucky when I realised the first series was beginning on channel 5 (Hallmark is ahead by about nine episodes) and sat down to watch the pilot.

I've heard from a few Brits that they don't like the series or find Hugh Laurie's accent a bit off. While such a reaction is understandable and expected, I personally think the accent is convincing and consider it better than my own impersonation. If Americans often do Brit accents (some good some bad) then I don't see the problem in Brits having a go at American accents, eh? Call it even.

And damn Hugh Laurie suits the role of Dr House. I barely recognised him with that unshaven look of his. I have been so used to him as quite clean and speaking in a very posh English accent from viewing Blackadder once in a while. Right next to Joanna Lumley (her posh accent rules, that it does sweetie), Hugh Laurie's voice is something that makes me grin at times.

Hugh Laurie is still funny but not in a light hearted fashion that Brits may be used to when he was in Black Adder. Dr House is sarcastic, aloof and hates talking to patients. He's not your typical doctor. Despite the rude appearance, he does have respect from his colleagues. The rest of the characters know he's incredibly smart.

My first impression of House was, "god, you're a rude prick - if not a funny one." I still think of him in this way but believe his sarcastic demeanour is much like a mask. The patient in the pilot seemed to know why he was distant from patients. Does House secretly have angst? I wouldn't be surprised. The end of episode 2 somehow shows another side to him, a side that nobody is familiar with yet. He's watching a game of lacrosse and is tense (look at the way he firmly clutches onto his walking stick like that). With the slow music playing in the background, you just can't help but wonder if he's got a sad aura at the moment. In the empty field, his emotions seem to be more open than usual.

House may be impolite but I have the feeling he's a bit of a sensitive person too. Of course this thought is based off speculation so I'm most likely to be in error.

The thing that constantly amuses me - House's interaction with Dr Cuddy. It changes from polite to impolite a few times. The way they trash talk one another brings a smile to my face ^_^;;

OK Dr House, you got me intrigued. I'll see you next Thursday night for ep 3.
