Basically the problem is ....

Trolling youtube for desi material has become one of my favourite time wasting tactics :) I recently found episodes of Koffee-with-Karan online. Like most of us, movie stars are also blatantly self indulgent. Its fun to see them step out of their usual scripted personas ..... even if it is only for a little bit. Some of the things I hear on the show are truly amazing. For example, KJ and coterie think that Kabhi Alvida Na kehna is actually a very well made movie, and that the only reason it was not accepted by the public (read as blockbuster) is because nobody wants to see married people cheat! Either they or me, one of us in out of touch with reality. I too did not like "KANK" (typing is a pain :D) much, but for a completely different reason. I thought the comedy was forced and un-funny ....... the emotions displayed & reasons attributed to them not credible. I actually thought that on paper, the characters and their situations were very interesting ....... great ingredients, just poor execution.

I read similar views on Nishabd. "AB should not do such a role" (what does that even mean ??) "Society should not condone such behaviour". Amazing. Do we really want to allow movies to define what human behaviour "should" be? Looks like we will tolerate deviant behaviour (anybody remember Baazigar ?) as long as the character had a *reason* to turn deviant. Dad being cheated qualifies, but husband and wife not being able to emotionally engage does not. In "KANK", the cheating husband was not even on my list of complaints. I take offense to repeated jokes about over weight people. I want to see comedy advance from giggling at the mention of gay men. There will always be a set of people who will complain that movies should not show "boys and girls doing bad things", I wish I could expect more from the artists themselves. Some respect especially, for the maturity of the viewer.
