on Friday week ago, on the occasion of the European Day of Languages, i took part in the Estonian demo-lesson ["demo-tundi". my first association was "demonstration = tüntetés"]. as a [co-]teacher! first, i made an intro about Estonian language, its phonology, dissimilarity to other European languages and the simplicity and logic of Uralic [i've been studying these languages for seven years, but still i'm not sure what's their proper name in English: FU? UF? finnic? fennic? so i switched to the more general term, although i haven't learnt Samoyed ...yet. ;)] languages [if only the Estonian had preserved some more features of them... :\ but my aim was not to discourage people].
then, everyone who came [it was a group of students from a college with a teacher i suppose, circa 30 people] got one line of a dialogue. there were 10 easy dialogues, written by Klaudia, consisting each of a question and an answer, with at least one word in both a question and a dialogue, e.g. Mis asub kunstimuuseum? - Kunstimuuseum asub Vanalinnas. people had to find their pairs and read the dialogues. i got the idea from the "training course for teachers of Hungarian language in western diaspora" i attended in Győr end of August.
after that, we made a competition what's the prettiest Estonian word - from among 10 proposals. and of course terviseks! won.
so that they could know also some Estonian culture, a short cartoon was shown:
but in Estonian, with Polish subtitles [it was very hard to make the subtitles to such an absurd piece of art... vide: na owłosieniu na nogach między skarpetkami a nogawką / rozkwitły kwiaty ... fortunately i succeed, thanks to vanozza's help.]
we gave them also a homework - i drew a landscape with an apple-tree, a fortified wall, sky, sun and cloud. and underwrote Estonian names of colours.
and, guess, whom did i see in this library where the whole event was held? yeah, the man who is attending every event in Warsaw. :]
immediately after the lesson i hurried to my dorm [i'm still using the term "dorm", mainly because it has a meaning of temporariness, which gives my excuse for not keeping my things in order. :D], left the leaflets and other Estonian propaganda stuff, took the bag and ran to the railway station. i succeed to reach the train almost on the last minute. but then... the train kept staying on the station for half an hour. when it finally started, i was called by phone in Hungarian. due to the train and my aversion towards phonecalls, i hadn't understood a word. when i finally arrived to Białystok, i called back just to learn that i am to download Gaudeamus igitur and play it during the opening ceremony of the Uni dept. just that... [allegedly on the same ceremony but on another dept, a guy responsible for providing the music brought "Magnificat" instead...]
and i was in Białystok to attend the XLI annual All-Polish Congress of Lutheran Youth [OZME]. because of the fact that Białystok is the homeland of Doktoro Esperanto, a lesson of the International Language was scheduled. along with a lesson of Hebrew, which made me hesitate which one to choose. but, fortunately, the problem got solved when my acquaintance asked me if i speak Esperanto. ... after several whiles i was sitting along with him by the presidial table and in front of thirtyish of people. :] [it turned out that someone from the Esperantist Association, who was to teach on this lesson, could not come. so we were there to replace him.] again, i made an intro about Esperanto language, its phonology, similarity to other European languages and simplicity. i pointed out the mal- prefix, the lack of irregularities etc. we also talked about the ideology. :) then we gave students some texts from the Bible in Esperanto, and they had to read it and recognize them. [super la abismo, kaj la Dio nomis la lumon tago kaj la mallumon nokto ktp.] at the end we read all together "Patro nia" prayer.
other points of program were seminars. i went [with my sister] to the seminar about diaspora, where one girl was talking rubbish. well, at least i hope it was rubbish.
and on the afternoon concerts started, on the main square in Białystok. well, in fact it's not square, it's a triangle with the city hall in the middle. there is a cafe called Esperanto cafe in the building, with timetable in Polish and Esperanto. [there are many esperanta accents in the city, like the wi-fi with information in Esperanto, touristic information in Polish, Eo and English and so on.]
first band to give concert was N.O.C. ['NIGHT'] meaning "Nie Opuszczę Cię" ['I won't leave you'] from Piła, featuring a pastor on a guitar, playing nice rock. unfortunately only a few people were dancing near the scene... after them Frühstück came, their frontman [of Dutch origin, speaking convincing Polish] went to the audience and warmed us up.
the last [=main] attraction of the evening was a concert of CME band [Centre for Mission and Evangelisation]. although this kind of music [worship?] is not my favourite one, i liked it, especially one song [with Chorus "Drużyno Syjonu, Syjonu" - "Team of Zion"]. i tried to find it, but i found only its Polish text. i suppose it must be an American song translated into Polish, but unfortunately i don't know the original text. [the meaning of Polish text is something like this: They'll attack the city, they'll conquer its walls, so numerous hosts obey Him; It's Lord who is speaking in front of His army, oh, Team of Zion, stand on my holy mountain!]
the congress ended with the church service. since there is no Lutheran church in Białystok nowadays [although the parish was reintroduced recently], we had the worship in a downchurch of one of the Roman Catholic Churches in Białystok, that was bestowed to us for this occasion. there was about 700 of us, so not much room, but at least we felt the communion. after the dinner we marched through the city to the railway station, where a special train was already waiting for us.
on Tuesday there was the opening ceremony of the academic[al?] year. i went there with the copy of Gaudeamus, but it turned out that this time my role was somehow wider then that of just a DJ. an ambassador of the Republic of Estonia came there and i was to translate him. fortunately into Polish. from Estonian, but into Polish. and i almost understood everything! anyway, as far as translating is concerned, i did translate everything. :]
after the inauguration i went to the dormitory. there i heard from outside, through the open window, two workers [i suppose of the parking], talking about time. namely, one asked another, why is he leaving work so early. the other answered but it's high time, why are you asking?. and the former joked oh, i just use the solar time. nonsence. but the same evening i went to the cinema, to meet an acquaintance and her friends. she told me the movie starts half past 7 p.m., i went to the box-office, asked for a ticket for a movie starting half past 7 p.m., and got it. then we were waiting for her friends. half past 7 p.m. one of those came, already slightly drunk, and told us to join him in a club, before going to the cinema. we said the movie starts in a minute, but he insisted it starts one hour later. i thought it'd be strange that the same movie to be shown in one cinema in a canon-mode... eventually i went to change my ticket, but it prooved unnecessary, because i got a ticket for half past 8... anyway, the movie ["Inglourious Basterds"] was indeed great and funny, as paivansade wrote.
and last Friday i was helding the "Rudiments of FennougristicsUralistics" for the first time. and 50 people came. fifty! because it's the whole class - both the Hungarian and Finnish studies, and both the day and "evening" class. and for most of them this is the first possibility to learn something about the other FU language[s]. and even to learn something from the general linguistics. i feel the mission. ;)
on the first lesson we were talking about language families and recognizing well-known for us, Slavs, roots in Orient words like "Veda" or "Buddha". we were also discussing the Grimm's law. next week i'm going to actually talk about Uralic language[s] and maybe i'll manage to provide some presentation on a projector.
yesterday i was home [church? ;)] on a carillon-concert, today on a Finnish service in Warsaw and tomorrow the Descriptive Grammar.
