Last week our cat, Hazel, came out of the dog house long enough for it to be apparent that she was sick in some way - she had a very wobbly walk. We took her to the vet on Thursday. It turned out that she had an infection and was also dehydrated. So she had a nice little stay with the vet while she was hooked up to an IV drip to get re-hydrated. And they found that the infection was in her ears (and in fact, one ear drum burst). No wonder Hazel was wobbly - she was probably dizzy as all get out!
We brought her home tonight. Hopefully, despite her being an outside cat, I'll be able to get hold of her twice a day in order to give her antibiotics and an ear flush. In the past, there have been days that have gone by where I haven't seen her at all! (Probably hiding out in the back room of the dog house...) However, while she seemed a bit perkier, she still seemed pretty relaxed and more willing to be held than usual, so hopefully she won't go too far for a while. On days I get called to sub, I'll probably need to treat her as soon as I get home, and then after eating dinner. (My neighbor the vet said it didn't matter when during the day, so long as it was twice.) If she makes herself too scarce, though, we may have to take her back to the vet to be boarded until she's all recovered.
I don't know why I don't think to write about these sorts of things more often... (or sooner, in this case...)
