Her and Me and You by Lauren Strasnick
Simon Pulse/Simon & Schuster, October 2010

I'm pleased to present the lastest Girlfriend's Cyber Circuit interview to celebrate the release of Lauren Strasnick's intriguing novel Her and Me and You.  I hope you enjoy!

Blurb

First love, broken friendships, and heartache all play a part in this evocative, voice-driven novel about Alex, a girl whose world is ripped apart when her father’s affair splits her family in two.

Alex moves with her mess of a mother to a new town, where she is befriended by hot, enigmatic Fred-and alternately flirted with and cold-shouldered by Fred’s twin sister, Adina. Others warn Alex to steer clear of the twins, whose sibling relationship is considered abnormal at best, but there’s just something about Fred-and something about Adina-that draws Alex to them and makes her want to be part of their crazy world, no matter the consequences.

“Strasnick’s slim second offering packs a lot into its short chapters: divorce, broken friendships, crushes, the lines between love and sex and more. Characterization, scenes, dialogue and setting are seamlessly distilled into so few sharp, image-rich phrases that the novel reads almost as if it were written in verse. Less is definitely more here, and readers are plunged into Alex’s physical and emotional world within three to four words. Although the plot moves swiftly, the author’s ability to capture Alex’s inner world in so few words give the novel depth and balance. Complex and thought-provoking.” -Kirkus

Interview with Lauren Strasnick

Your novel in 140 characters (Twitter-version):

Alex's parents split.  She moves.  Meets twins.  Messiness ensues!

If you could be any kind of dairy product, what would you be?

This really runny goat’s milk brie that is just so delicious!

What about your main character(s) and why?

Alex would be something versatile but with bite: cheddar, maybe?  Fred would be smoked gouda (he’s rich & he smokes) and Adina would be clarified butter.  She really is that refined.

Do you think in themes?  If so, what’s the theme of your new novel?

Absolutely!  & I’d say this book is about obsessive relationships.  Co-dependency.  Clinging to something that’s no longer working.   Each “couple” in this book is facing something similar: Alex & Evie, Adina & Fred, Alex’s parents, too - no one here is having an easy time letting go.

What piece of fiction or non-fiction did you not write but wish you had?

The Secret History by Donna Tartt.  Absolutely brilliant.  Or maybe The Mysteries Of Pittsburgh by Michael Chabon?  Oh, or: The Basic Eight by Daniel Handler?  Ack!  I could go on and on…
