I had a wonderful time at the Heritage Book Festival. The people were lovely, especially the wonderful
Nancy Haddock who took me all around St. Augustine, a city I'm now head over heels in love with (I know, it's "with which I'm head over heels in love, but hey, it's the weekend)! I could give you the whole history of the place, but I found it already laid out
here. Check out the pics below (many taken at beautiful Flagler College) and you'll see why.
Photo captions:
1. One of Henry Flagler's buildings, though I forget just which.
2. View of the bay ~7:30 a.m. on Saturday, where I saw with my sugar-free dark chocolate caramel fudge iced coffee, the wind in my hair and the desire to freeze time.
3. A view of the dome of Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church and part of Flagler College.
4. The tres cool passion flower.
5. Uber chic bird of paradise.
6. Beautiful orange iris at the lighthouse. Beyond that, I couldn't tell you.
7 & 8. More views at Flagler College.
9. Nancy Haddock and me at the Heritage Book Festival. (I've left out the photos of us with the statue of Ponce de Leon at the Fountain of Youth. The too-too-touristy shots mess with my mystique, such as it is .)
10. It'll come to me any second now, but I'm blanking on the name of the lovely lady from the haunted
St. Francis Inn in St. Augustine. I know I signed it to the book, but...perhaps with more caffeine in my system.
11.
St. Augustine Lighthouse.
12. Lighthouse stairs, which we climbed all the way to the cap, though our calves were twitching!
I should have and didn't take a photo of the wonderful B&B where I stayed, the
Casablanca Inn, where given a very slight delay at reception, I was offered a free drink in their martini bar. They served mimosas, warm muffins and breakfast of choice in the mornings and had a bathtub complete with jets and bubbles that I could have lived in comfortably. They also had a wonderfully nice staff and were located such that I could walk to the fort and anything else I wanted to see in old town. Nancy Haddock was my fabulous native guide, and her friend Karen Harvey was kind enough to take us on a ghost walk Saturday afternoon, despite the rain. I've already got plans to bring my family back, because there's so much they would love, from the Fountain of Youth to the Alligator Farm, the oldest wooden schoolhouse to the fort. What a fantastic weekend!
