Another Day to Rant

I realize that months have flown by since last I wrote a proper journal entry, and days since I last posted anything not inspiration-related. School has been busy and will only get worse from here on out thus I expect no consistent entries until Thanksgiving break when one of my biggest papers (and stress level) will be done. Beyond that, life has been normal, boring even. When semesters roll around my life seems to take a hault on anything beyond its reach. Further, I never feel my life is ever interesting enough to journal about, let alone consistently journal about. But I have come to realize that getting into the practice is not such a bad idea, especially when I look at it as a chance to improve my writing skills.

Anyways, I am on mid-term break and do not have much homework to do so I am taking the day to enjoy myself. Tomorrow I will be going with my family to a Renaissance fair for a few hours. I doubt we shall stay the whole time but I never know what will happen. Today I played a video game but mainly I did laundry. I still need to do more laundry so I expect getting off of here soon and doing that. I most likely will stay up late again to read some or try and do some homework. Oh, and my brother wants me to watch Godzilla so I should most likely do that while folding laundry.

Went back to playing some Dragon Age II. I started it over with a new character since I was getting annoyed with everything in my last one. Mainly in the friendship/rivalry system. I feel like Bioware sets me up to fail these games, or, at least, do a very good job first time through. I did a much better job when first playing Mass Effect but, then again, I have always been better at playing Mass Effect than most of my other games. Skyrim can annoy me with its lack of registering when you make choices and Dragon Age can become equally annoying for the opposite reason, a.k.a. too many choices affecting every little thing I do. I really have no right to complain as I do enjoy having my choices matter but sometimes it would be nice if I could take a stroll around Hightown without my companions whining at me about something or asking each other if they ever thought about killing themselves. (Brilliant Anders...simply brilliant.) I also believe it doesn't help that Dragon Age II sorely lacks in character development and likability. Even some characters I did not much agree with in Dragon Age Origins had a decent, fleshed out personality that I never found myself hating them.

Oh no, Dragon Age II is much different. Characters are weaker all around but the two, maybe three, that stand out the best are Varric, Fenris, and Isabella. Each character can be good in their own right but generally these three have some of the better well-roundedness. Granted, I am not a huge fan of Isabella but at least she seems to have some form of character progression within the story. Fenris can as well and out of everyone, at least his "mopy rants" entertain me. Anders just makes me sick and considering how awesome he was in Dragon Age: Awakening makes it worse. Now he just whines about mage oppression every chance he can find (if he isn't asking horrible questions to my companions as though everyone should also enjoy his whining self.) Merrill is annoying in her utter stupidity and lack of logical thought. If it wasn't for that grand flaw she might not be so bad. Aveline is nice but she seems boring to me half the time. (I suppose at least she doesn't complain near as much as others.) I am not denying that I cannot find enjoyment and true laughter and pain from these characters but considering their competition in Dragon Age Origins, they are severely lacking. You guys might not agree with my choices overall in terms of "best" character development, etc, but hopefully we can all agree Dragon Age Origins is the better game overall. Dragon Age II is better in its character customization, its ability to actually let you have a voice, and its battle system. But Dragon Age II also feels like a worse off Mass Effect which can be irritating at best.

I guess my struggle with playing this game is having to check every five seconds if my characters are having my back or not, or if I am going to have to shut up a whining-fest. I am a very heavily character-oriented person and so if my characters lack in depth and personality then it kills me when playing a game. I love making choices count but sometimes it is almost too much how they make these choices count. Can I for once not have everyone hating on me for simply talking to someone? I mean we all have our beliefs and annoyances but heaven's sake they will whine at you for the dumbest reason. Can we not be slightly more practical? Ugh. I doubt I'll do much with this game anymore until my Christmas break rolls around but playing this game is a chore and sometimes I wonder if it is worth the effort. Mass Effect can be a chore as well but it is because I get so involved in that game it is hard not to feel as though the world truly is on your shoulders. Dragon Age II...well let us just say Dragon Age II seems to be keeping me at arms length from the same great experience, just a different one.

Did not mean to rant about a video game since I was trying to say other things but, well, that is really the most interesting thing I did today besides listen to Styx and A-ha! with my brother.
