Created by a man known as Dr. Dimitri Yuriev, Albedo was born as a designer child - someone created with the genetic information of their maker. At the same time, he was also born as a U.R.T.V, which stands for "U-DO retro virus". In more common terms, he could be called a clone.
A URTV is a bio-engineered weapon with anti-U-DO waves. These waves are exactly the opposite of U-DO's waves, resulting in U-DO's waves being canceled out when the two meet. Unfortunately, little is known about the connection between U-DO and URTV's beyond that.
Albedo and others were merely designed to destroy U-DO. Now, U-DO itself is confusing. No one knows what it actually is. Standing for Unus-Mundus Drive Operation system, it exists on the UMN (information network that connects the entries galaxy- this is what allows people to go into hyperspace), making people think that it's a dangerous AI that sends people into comas, even killing them on occasion. To simplify U-DO, one could call it a form of virus corrupting the universe.
When he was "born," Albedo was attached to unit 666's - Rubedo's - back, and stayed there from conception until the 28th week. As a URTV, it was intended for him to be well-balanced with his abilities and emotions, however Albedo and three others (Rubedo, Citrine and Nigredo) came out differently. He was a "high spec individual", because he exceeded what he was intended to be. Because of the sudden "change," these four special URTVs were known as "variants", while the rest were just "standard". They also had different missions. Growing up with one another, they became really close with each other as well. However, Citrine was hidden from the three males, so they didn't know of her existence.
Their training started young, learning how to control the waveforms and how to fight U-DO by using the U-DO simulator, which created fake U-DO waves. Anything that could be classified as a weapon, they learned. However, one day when they were 12, a young mother appeared at the Institute with her daughter - asking for help. Her daughter, Sakura Mizrahi, was suffering from a disease that completely shut down her central nervous system. She couldn't interact with the outside world, but she was able to function somewhat (like being able to play the piano). Dr. Yuriev agreed to help Juli Mizrahi,and Sakura's testing began.
The tests involved the U.R.T.V's, because U-DO was somehow connected to her illness (they just didn't know how it was connected). The URTV's dove into her Subconscious domain for the first time - the world within her mind, which happened to be a house. The three variants were confused because instead of being outside the house... they were in a closet. Cramped and huddled up really close, Albedo grew scared and demanded a light be turned on but, instead Nigredo and Rubedo yelled at him to stop moving so much.
Finally, the door opened and they fell to the floor. Rubedo and Albedo started to argue until Nigredo fully examined the room and told them that their coordinates were correct. The brothers stopped fighting to look at the girl. Surprised to see her, they began to run out of the room until Sakura stopped them. She asked if they could hear her and they nodded. From there, Sakura began to cry, happy that they came. This confused Albedo, leading him to hide behind Nigredo until it was time to leave. However, after they met Sakura, Rubedo began to change. He was always with Sakura, in virtual space and in the real world. As a result, Albedo started to hate Sakura. His brother would rather spend time with Sakura than with Albedo- the thought angered him. He told Rubedo that his concentration had been slipping, that he needed to focus more. Rubedo was confident that he would fulfill the mission, so Albedo had to ask if he could trust him. Rubedo said he could, also adding that Albedo needed to pull himself together - which resulted in the variant crying.
Later that day they ran into Citrine for the first time in 12 years. This meeting was nothing more than "hey look, there are female units". They left their sister to go get ready to dive into Sakura's Subconscious, but as they were in the diving pods, Albedo couldn't help but glare at the standard types. He couldn't stand them, they didn't have wills of their own. All of them together just formed one collective consciousness. As Albedo glared at the standards, Yuriev and Juli told them of their objective - a white beach. Within it lies whatever was obstructing Sakura's neural connection, and they were to destroy it. Some of the standards began to communicate with the variants telepathically. They questioned why Rubedo was the leader- he was a monster to them, after all. This didn't settle well with Albedo, and he told them to shut up. If he could have, he would have killed them right there and then. The dive-capsules finally activated and they entered the Subconscious domain.
In the domain, the URTVs found a giant orb in the sky - U-DO. Waves from U-DO began to attack the URTVs, infecting the standard types that soon began to turn into monsters. The variants were able to defeat the infected URTVs, and after the battle, Albedo tackled unit 623. His whole personality had changed, showing the start of his insanity. He punched the URTV as hard as he could, almost killing him, until Rubedo stopped him. Seeing the crazed look in Albedo's eyes, Rubedo began to back away - which only enraged Albedo even more. When they were out of the domain and back at the Institute, Albedo was in the park by himself until Nigredo and Rubedo showed up.
Rubedo questioned Albedo's actions and Albedo responded that 623 just needed to regenerate- he'd be fine afterwards. The two other variants were confused, until Albedo pulled out a gun and pointed it to his own head. "Yeah, Regeneration, like this." he told them, and pulled the trigger. His head was gone and his body nearly fell over.
Unfortunately, instead of regenerating like he should have, Albedo found himself in Template.
