Characters: Vivi, Zidane, Steiner
Summary: "Yea--you're blowing too hard. You've got to be more gentle! Like it's a pretty lady."
"What you got there, Vivi?"
Zidane threw himself down next to the kid, watching as he blew on a piece of grass between his fingers again. Vivi paused and held it out for Zidane to see--it was just an innocent blade of grass. "What are you doing with that?" Zidane asked, curious.
Vivi looked down and fumbled with the brim of his hat. "Steiner was teaching me how to whistle," he explained. He brought the blade back to his mouth pressed between his hands and blew--there was no sound save his breath between his fingers. He pulled in on himself a bit self-consciously. "Freya took him to scout before we finished..."
Zidane scratched his head. That was Freya. She claimed Steiner and Amarant were the only ones aside from her who had the brains to tell a Grand Dragon's tracks from their own footprints--Zidane had of course contested this, but after he'd mistaken those Carve Spider tracks for a Mu's...
Still, who'd ever thought Steiner was such a softie to teach this sort of stuff. "Here, you're doing it wrong," he said and Vivi looked up. "I am?" The boy asked, looking at the grass between his fingers. He'd been practicing for half an hour and hadn't been able to do much more than get a lot of spit on his hands.
"Yea--you're blowing too hard. You've got to be more gentle!" Zidane explained, and then thumped himself on the chest and added with a wink, "Like it's a pretty lady."
Vivi's eyes blushed a darker amber beneath his hat and he nodded. Right... He had no idea, but-- He brought his whistle back to his lips and tried again, this time more softly. The barest squeak of a sound came out and he stopped, surprised. He'd done it! He looked at Zidane who motioned encouragingly for him to continue playing.
Closing his eyes he took a deep breath and blew again. How had Steiner said to... He widened the space between his hands slightly to try and change the sound. The noise immediately stopped. Blowing a bit harder he got it back before closing the space a bit again and blowing more gentle.
By the time he was able to work out a very rough, two-note composed melody Zidane was clapping his hands in beat with a grin. "As studious as ever, Master Vivi. Bravo," a voice said behind the two and they whirled around to see Steiner. His broadsword covered in monster ichor was tucked gently under his elbow so he could clap congratulatingly for Vivi.
Vivi looked down, pleased. "Zidane helped," he said immediately, but the other boy shook his head. "Nope, was all Vivi here," he said, tugging on the brim of the mage's hat and standing up with a stretch. "Welp, I'm gonna go find Dagger and see how dinner's going. Vivi, Sir Rusty."
He turned to go and Steiner immediately exploded into anger and annoyance. "You will stay away from the Princess--" he began, arms waving threateningly. Zidane interrupted with a base remark. As the two's voices began to escalate in argument Vivi turned back to his whistle and blew out a rough tune. At least he'd learned something today.
