ahh spring... i remember a time when it was my favorite season, that lovely moment in time before my body decided it didn't like pollen so very much. useless genes! my nose hasn't been running as badly as the past two years, but my body for the past two weeks has been completely broke busted. i wake up with a sore throat, stay groggy throughout the day, and leave work "early" at 5:30 to pass out on my bed until 9. it's not pretty. the fact that i actually have a lot to cross off my to do list doesn't help either, posting being one of them. :p
did i mention that with spring also comes the awkward period where my apartment management tries to pinpoint which day to switch the central air from heat to a/c? it's 50F outside in the mornings and the evenings, and 80F during the day, causing my apt to maintain an avg temp of oh... not very fucking delightful? so i sleep with my windows open, letting the nice breeze deposit a nice dusting of yellow on my headboard whilst i fretfully toss and turn in bed. i wake up feeling robbed, disgruntled, and clammy.
yeah, i really did love spring once.
and now moving onto why i haven't posted lately.. oh so many busy busy reasons my friends! the week following my return from florence was spent obviously recouping. god, you really start feeling your body slowing down in your late 20s. :p the week after that was spent reversing the dirty cluttered state of my apartment for a happy rsemi vandy reunion visit consisting of soldier boy gruntie returning from afghanistan and best friend janicu with fellow accomplice josh. the main reason was for the dc cherry blossom festival, but it was really good to see everyone again after almost a year hiatus.
other troublesome shits:
- my brother may be moving in with either wes or myself. drama, especially b/c the fool keeps on changing his mind last minute.
- work = boo. VERY boo and a couple of UGs to boot. real tear my hair out stuff.
- i bought a hamster, a campbell's dwarf hamster. she may be pregnant, not tame, not a bonus.
she does a very good impression of a ping pong ball. knocked up or just pleasantly plump? hmmm...
i came face to face with the grunters early friday evening. it had been a big deal when he had originally deployed for afghanistan roughly 3 years ago, but then he came back in less than a year, left again, etc etc, and everyone just got used to the idea of him being there. despite him mentioning bombs and guns going off in the distance, i was unfazed. for one, gruntie went as a logistic pencil pusher. another and most important was... well it was gruntie, old obnoxious friend from college full of so much vigor and spunk that he was simply not going to die. it didn't seem possible. he was invincible.
ok that and the fact the fucker called and chatted with me on aim almost as often as he had done in the states. it got to the point where he would call, and i wouldn't bother picking up. :p it felt no different from when he had been stationed in north carolina, the biggest difference being he made daily crazy demands on how many care packages we were to send him. so now he's back and needier than ever, especially b/c he's moving to the dc area in july. boggle... 5 years of threatening to come here, and it's finally happening. :O
gruntie attempting to tame a slice of pizza. he appears to be losing.
ahh yesu, so gruntie showed up, left his craps, and jetted off not to be seen again until the next morning.
globugs was having his birthday bash at aqua, so wes and gruntie spent the rest of the evening there while i waited for janicu and josh to arrive from white plains. most wonderful ranting with them was. :p
the cherry blossom street festival on saturday turned out to be a complete and utter wash due to the nasty weather. it was something like 50F, rainy, and windy enough to blow our umbrellas inside out. the street food definitely did not fare well either. we tried the takoyaki, taiyaki, okonomiyaki, and udon but it was all cold and sadness. we gave up after roughly 30 minutes and headed back home to watch sci fi channel reruns. i felt particularily vexed b/c the street festival is one of my favorite events in dc. ohh and to add insult to injury, pretty much all the cherry blossoms had fallen off the limbs in a span of several days. i had totally wanted janicu to experience them in the flesh, but lawds...!
we eventually headed out to
oyamel down the street for happy hour, 1.75 botanas (little bites) and $4 margaritas, hard to beat. :p this event panned much better, and i got to see janicu get buzzed enough to exclaim outloud her never before declared love for miniature golf. almost 10 years of knowing this woman, and i never knew! :O food was good, drinks tasty, restaurant dark, so most of my pictures didn't come out.
i've posted about this place before, and i also have brunch pictures to post later too so... :p
jose's favorite potatoes with mole, according to the menu. the mole as aways was well executed, but i wasn't a fan of the soggy pseudo fries. reminded janicu and me of poutine.
the rest of the evening was spent at the whole foods in old towne alexandria (the best whole foods i've visited thus far) and then a quiet night watching a korean movie while nibbling on cheese and sipping on some jew brew josh brought back from his birthright tour in israel.
this whole foods sells loose eggs, including this... ostrich egg?? actually i forgot what kind it was, but it was $26. :p
a sangiovese from far away. grunters said he could taste tobacco. i say it was his upper lip he was tastings.
the next morning janicu woke up busted and hungover. mental note: being busted does not mix well with indian buffet. :p we drove all the way to fairfax for south indian at minerva, and it literally knocked most of us out except josh and grunters. :p wes curled up in fetal position and burrowed under a mound of comforter while janicu took a nap on the floor next to the air mattress she had unwittingly deflated several hours too early. so not much was done on sunday, but someone grunters belted out
this xanga post with the minutae of the visit along with completing an online chemistry exam. :p everyone disbanded around 7, another vandy reuion complete!
the one reoccuring frustration i have when janicu visits me is that there are SOOOO many restaurants i want her to try, and yet never enough stomach space for a food tour to happen without someone getting food coma and passing out for the afternoon. XD
it was definitely good to see everyone again, although i'm sure i'll be sick of grunters very VERY soon. :p
