Does heartache make you stronger?
Heartache is an injury to the spirit, in and of itself it cannot strengthen a person, only hurt them.
The Firstborn of Arda - the elves - can come to point where they flee their bodies if heartache is too severe. In essence, they die.
On the other hand, should a person live through the pain of heartache they are better equipped to cope with future pain but even so, that does not make heartache or any other pain a desirable thing to experience and I would not call it upon any Child of Ilúvatar were it avoidable.
