Review: Doll Spring Roll Pastry

Jun 07, 2014 14:23

Once in a while, my mom and I will sit down and make spring rolls. More accurately, she prepares the meat stuffing whatever thing, then demands that I come roll and/or fry the spring rolls. It's not the most pleasant task in the world but the results are generally worth it. Even if I whine and complain the entire time.

Anyway, my mom picked up a different brand of spring roll pastry sheets to try. I don't remember exactly what brand we normally use but I do know that we typically get the regular size. This time, she bought Doll Spring Roll Pastry in the large (24 sheets). I don't know if Doll makes other sizes. At first, I was not happy. The large was redonkulously large and when we test fried a few rolls, there was just too much pastry. So we cut all the sheets in half diagonally and test fried a few of those rolls; these worked out much better.

What I didn't like: these aren't easy sheets to roll. They're not impossible, it's just that it'd been nice if they were a bit more supple. They aren't so thin that they rip from the slightest touch, but they do dry out quickly so it's a good idea to have the pastry sitting on a damp towel or something.

What I liked: These fry up real nice. Much better than what we were using before. They fry up golden and crisp and just really nice. Did I mention that they were nice? 'Cause they're nice.

Would I recommend these? If there's a regular size and you're pretty versed in rolling spring rolls, give these a try.
