i've been pretty much approaching hibernation since friday. saturday, my friend tim came down... this is a regular event, he doesn't know many people back home, he doesn't get on with his parents and he has a strange combination of bad luck and occasional stupidity, all of which mean that he tries to get away from home as much as possible.
usually bad luck and stupidity are quite exclusive -- daft people always muddle through; intelligent people often don't have a lot of common sense, which probably appears to them as being unlucky in everyday life; and everyone knows an overachiever. but bad luck and an absence of common sense are quite rare.
so anyway, we hung around, drank beer in the garden, passed time and went off to a volkswagen car show a little outside windsor at night. which was the main reason he came down, being fairly passionate about his '92 scirocco. but he also -- this being the main influence on my day-to-day life -- brought with him a copy of farcry, possibly the most addictive computer game i've ever played. i'm entering a war of attrition/male pride with my flatmate as we struggle to be the first to complete this game... cue sleepless nights, irritation with people who call, and a return of the crazy concentration i managed to apply last year at uni.
and when i just can't stand to be inside any more i freak out and have to walk out by the river. about 2 miles upstream is a little cove where you can stand, watch the ducks, nod politely as passersby in a very english way, look at the big house on the other bank and just generally chill out. i like the way you can just go outside in this country, walk and feel free. it's that kind of freedom which i appreciate. being able to walk and walk and actually get somewhere, being able to get away from people, and having the scenery around me constantly changing. it's better than any of the other little worlds - computer games, tv or books. i can't get enough of walking without phone, money, keys or wallet or telling anyone where i'm going.
