Just Say Yes
Kris is known to be stealthy hugger. Adam doesn’t even see it coming as he stands on the deck outside of the lake house in Arkansas. It comes from behind, full and firm, which makes Adam tuck forward just slightly with a light gasp. Kris presses flush to Adam’s back; his chin finds the back of Adam’s shoulder and strong biceps squeeze Adam’s sides while hands brace flat against his chest. Kris doesn’t say anything, but he doesn’t have to. Adam knows he’s grinning.
“Oh, hey there,” Adam whispers with a smile spreading across his face, crinkling his eyes.
When Kris speaks, it’s a deep, sluggish tone and Adam feels a warm buzzing in his belly. “I couldn’t help myself. I’ve missed you.”
Adam’s stomach does a little flip. “I’ve been waiting for you. It’s beautiful out here.”
“I know.”
Of course, Kris knows. This is his vacation home, after all. It’s nestled in some man-made woods of tall trees and barbed bushes that keep out the lookie-loos. Adam’s only been here for a few minutes, waiting for Kris to arrive, but already, he’s more relaxed. He feels like he can breathe freely.
“I can feel your heart beating,” Adam adds, he’s in no hurry to break-up the one-sided embrace. “It’s so steady, like a metronome.”
Kris murmurs something incoherent, but the sound of his voice makes Adam slowly fluster.
“Aren’t you gonna turn around, say ‘hi’ to me?” Kris asks with a pout in his voice.
Adam’s smile falters as he swallows nervously over a lump that rises into his throat. “I don’t want you to let go,” he openly admits. He bites down on his lower lip as Kris pulls away and swings him around.
“Come here,” Kris says with a chuckle as he plants his face against Adam’s shoulder and reaffirms his hug.
Adam returns the embrace, wrapping his long arms around Kris’s toned back and t-shirt. He holds on like Kris might topple and fall away if he ever let go. Longing pinches his face before he presses a kiss to Kris’s ear. “Missed you,” he breathes out as his cheek finds Kris’s messy hair.
“You said you needed me,” Kris mutters. “I couldn’t say ‘no’ to that.”
Adam told Kris he would be in the area for a radio show. In actually, he flew straight from Los Angeles just for this moment - to have Kris wrapped in his arms. He desperately wants more than a hug, but he knows Kris needs some time to heal from his recent separation. Still, Adam can’t help but babble out, “I think you needed me just as badly.”
Kris stiffens, but doesn’t pull away. “I can feel your heart beating,” he says quietly.
“It’s waiting for you,” Adam is hesitant to say, but he can’t hold back now that he has a hold of Kris and can breathe in the warmth of him.
“Waiting for what?” Kris sounds suspicious.
Adam’s voice quakes when he replies, “For you to say ‘yes.’”
Kris is quiet for several seconds, which tick by like minutes for Adam. Eventually, Adam pulls his hug upward, until he’s gripping the nape of Kris’s neck. It’s a risky move, but he’s wanted the skin-to-skin contact ever since that first embrace. Kris stirs like he’s been lost in thought. His head turns and Adam nuzzles his nose against Kris’s forehead.
“I don’t think it’s that simple,” Kris says bluntly. It’s difficult to hear. Adam waits for Kris to push him away. It’s happened so many times, he expects the breakaway.
Adam presses a soft kiss to Kris’s hairline, which makes Kris tip his head back. Adam releases Kris’s neck and pushes his fingertips over the shell of Kris’s ear as he stares into sad and unguarded brown eyes. “I couldn’t help myself,” Adam says, though it’s not apologetic.
Kris’s gaze searches Adam’s face. “It’s too soon. I can’t take it seriously.” Adam’s heart dips in pain.
“How many different ways can I say that I love you before you believe me?”
Kris finally pulls away. “Don’t do this to me. Don’t make me choose. I can’t keep doing this, Adam.”
“Then say ‘yes,’” Adam pleads.
“I don’t know if I can.”
“Just give it a try.”
Lips pressing into a line, Kris’s face struggles to stay blank. It doesn’t work. Adam can see the pain and anxiety, and it makes his chest ache. He reaches out to proffer a hand to Kris.
“Even if you can’t say it, at least let me hold you.”
Slowly, Kris shakes his head and chews on his full lower lip. Adam lowers his hand and decides that this was not one of his best ideas. Kris clearly needs time to heal, but how long is Adam supposed to wait?
“I thought you loved me,” Adam says, wounded.
Kris winces. “I do.”
“Then what’s holding you back?”
“I don’t know,” Kris says with a sigh. He absently scratches at his arm. “I don’t even know what I’m doing here, now.”
Adam can’t help his confused pouting. “You’re here for me.”
“Well, yeah, but…” Kris’s voice trails off and he avoids Adam’s gaze. “I can’t figure out if I’m here for me.”
Stepping forward, Adam quietly notes, “This isn’t some sort of game, Kris. We need each other. I want this. Don’t you want this?”
Kris’s face struggles with a grimace and a perplexed look of frustration. “I don’t know,” he edges out, but doesn’t fight it when Adam pulls him into another hug.
Having Kris in his arms gives Adam little comfort when he can see how upset it’s making Kris. Sighing, Adam runs his hands over Kris’s upper arms before gripping his elbows and holding him out.
“Just say you want this and I’m yours,” Adam says with a firm shake, hoping to wake Kris up to what’s right in front of him. “Tell me what you’re thinking.”
Kris’s brow wrinkles darkly as he frowns. “I’m thinking that maybe I’ll say ‘yes,’” a beat, “but not today, not tomorrow, just…soon.”
Adam doesn’t know when that will be, but he’s been waiting for so long, what’s a couple days, weeks? He’s only in Arkansas for the weekend, but maybe, hopefully, Kris will make up his mind within the next two days.
Dipping his head, Adam pulls Kris up for a chaste kiss on the lips. He immediately drops back to gauge Kris’s reaction, but is shocked when Kris chases his mouth. Taking that as an invitation for more, Adam cups Kris’s face in his hands, deepening the kiss.
When Adam tests by pressing his tongue to Kris’s lower lip, Kris abruptly parts and takes Adam’s hands into his own. “Follow me,” he says like that hadn’t just been sucking face. “I’ll show you the guest room.”
Abandoning his weekend luggage, Adam lets Kris take the lead and trails after Kris to a side door off the deck. The room is painted in a light, soothing taupe color with off-white carpeting and bedding.
“Do you mind if I lie down?” Adam asks quietly, hoping that maybe Kris will follow him.
Kris lets go of Adam’s hands and gestures to the bed. “It’s yours for the weekend. So, no, I don’t mind.”
Adam feels a flutter in his chest when Kris turns and brushes past him, going for his luggage. Slipping off his boots, Adam takes a seat on the down comforter. He fluffs a pillow before lying down, watching Kris all the while. His bags are brought to the room, and Kris stands in the deck doorway looking unsure of what to do next. They trade stares before Kris closes the glass door and walks away, which makes Adam’s chest ache more than he ever thought possible.
Not today, not tomorrow, just…soon.
“Soon,” Adam echoes quietly before tossing onto his back. He licks the taste of Kris off of his lips and sighs in thought. Who even knew saying one simple word would be so difficult? Adam certainly didn’t, but the suggestion that a part of Kris wants to say ‘yes’ is the solace he takes.
