Well, you can get useful information over the communicators, so you might want to at least keep an eye on them.

Only if it was really happening. Most people here tend to be too jumpy.

No, it doesn't, but people panic.

And either way, people do use these to exchange useful information and keep in contact. I'd suggest at least keeping yours with you, even if you don't want to use it much.
